Is picking something different from the meta against the rules?

I was recently playing a game when i decided that I wanted to play an ap carry as bottom after my middle lane picked an ad carry. After we lost the game my teammates told me i was reported for picking the wrong role. Is it against the rules to play something that is not the standard? What if you tell your team in champion select? I picked the bottom role and I played very well and I tried to win.. And in my defense, AP carries do very well 1v1 vs AD carries early on

i'm lead to believe that it is not against the rules because i see ad carries in jungle now.. ad carries in mid.. ad carries in top.. yet for some reason you cant do an ap carry on bottom?

You're fine if that's all you did, dude.

You risk getting into more confrontations with people if you pick something off meta, of course, but as long as you keep your cool through it and don't get into a mud-slinging fest in retaliation you can play whatever the heck you want.

It is not against the rules, but please don't make that decision lightly. The meta is how we play the game and it is how almost everyone you run into wants the game to be played. You will essentially be instantly hated by everyone in the game for choose off meta and automatically deemed a troll by many of them.

Picking off meta champs isn't against the rules.

It isn't.

However, that doesn't mean that people won't look for any other possible reason to report you if they think you deserve it.

if it's ranked, i might be a little pissed but in normals who cares, just a game

I don't believe so. I've done thresh ADC multiple times with a blitz. Or blitz/ali.

It's not the best but it works and when it does it's hilarious.

yes it can be. it's technically throwing the game. able to win bot lane without a carry is pretty hard. especially since adc facilitate sieges and destroy tanks from a distance. if i go full AP jinx, that's reportable. it's also trolling

There's nothing wrong with doing something "off-meta". The meta is defined by the players, and you can technically play whatever you want. Sure, over time it has generally been agreed on what kinds of champions are best in which positions, but you're not going to punished if you try to change the formula a bit (so long as you are trying to win, and not blatantly trolling of course).
