@Riot: Here is a good way to fix the situation of Leavers and AFkers during ranked

Psymo··76 votes·8,481 views

I understand that someone leaving will happen at one point or another in ranked games, but this puts the team with lesser people at a extreme disadvantage, more so if it is the carry who up and leaves due to Rage Quitting or Tilting. A lot of people have expressed that there should be some kind of "Justice" or Solution for this issue and I have thought about it for a long time and figured why not bring this up.

I know that Riot has the ability to see when someone leaves the game due to the "Red name" or "Big X in the icon" How about the team that gets a loss by having a 4 V 5 actually gets a boost for their next win in LP. As well as, the leaver gets a penalty for the next ranked win they receive.

Most people in the game hover around making about 20 LP per game, but when they lose its a loss of about 16 LP loss. How about when a summoner gets a LOSS due to AFK/Leaver their next win instead of being 20 LP gain gets a Gain of 20LP + (.5 of their total Lost LP).

For Example: 20 + (.5 x "16 LOSS LP") for a total of 28 LP. This will help out the players who were stuck trying to win a 4 v 5 and were unable to due to one of their team mates Rage Quitting or Tilting and leaving.

Then their is the opposite side of the coin. If a player leaves the game they need to be punished due to them actually inhibiting a team from having a fair chance to win. Because of this problem, I feel that It should be Punished in the same way. So when they leave/AFK the game, it should take their next win and DECREASE their LP gain. It should be 20 LP - (.5 of their total Won LP).

For Example: 20 - (.5 x "20 WON LP") for a total of 10 LP gain for that game. This will help stop players from leaving the game due to them just having a "Bad Game" and rage quitting and Afking in base. Also if they do leave its their fault, no matter the situation, that just made the odds for their team to win, not in their favor. Its a TEAM game not a 1 man show.

Please let me know what you all think about this. I feel it is fair and would actually help the ranked system in general. Please Vote and Comment to let me know what everyone thinks about this. I made sure to make it fair on both ends.

Thank you,

xSimox

Edit 1: 10 Up Votes!

So i have seen a few people that say there should be a time limit for the AFK/Leaver and yes I agree. Thus putting on a timer of at Min. 10 minutes could work.

Also I was thinking about it and I don't think the team with 4 players should surrender the game. What do you guys think about that?

Edit 2: 50 Up Votes!

I have seen a lot of people say that in flex, a good way to prevent 1 team member from leaving to give the other team members a boost is to have it apply to the whole team.

If you are on a team or in a Flex 3, 4, 5 man team if 1 member AFK's or Leaves then all members of that PRE-MADE party get the same Punishment.

It prevents Party member A from telling Party member B to leave that that Members A, B, and C get the Bonus.
If Party member B Leaves then Party member's A & C get the same punishment as member B.

Okay, lets start with the Flex. Clearly everyone will try and use the system to their advantage, but then you also have leaver buster to deal with at the chance of a possible Perma Ban. I dont think most people would be willing to risk that even more so when their account could be banned in the process. Or you can just make it where in a 5 man Flex this option doesnt happen. You can have it inside a Solo/Duo, so on and so forth.

next your Logic on the 0 LP doesnt make sense. Dodgeing doesnt affect the rate.
Second, if you are at 0 LP the math doesnt add up! Let me do the math for you to break this down. 20 + (.5 x "0 LOSS LP [since you started at 0]") for a total of 20 LP. lol Yep... It wouldn't affect you.

I gotta say I do appreciate your style of trying to cheat the system though. Clearly that wont work well though.

I think also that you can have a time limit. So someone who dced right as the nexus dies doesn't give people in flex bonus lp.

Magical Player2 votes

You will not be banned for leaving games unless for extreme cases in a solo duo at 0 lp heres an example Ex: of smurfs abusing this system I have 5+ smurf accounts I can duo with and have the afk inside games If Im at 0 lp and I know I will get +50% of my loss back by winning another game So I will throw games by afkign on my smurf to get the 50% lp gain on my next win for my main I can do this over and over again to essentially get a 4 game climb instead of a 5 game climb It is worth I could buy accounts to throw away if they get banned, since All i need them for is to afk in games so I can get the 50% bonus for free It promotes a system in which people are almost entitled to afkgin in games to get their buddy a free 50% lp boost or even we're losing a game Now im a good guy, I afk so my team gets a 50% lp boost next win

In addition the real problem lies in how a lp system works

You can't gain more than what was lost so 5 people gain 28 a game the other 5 lost 20 we've added 40 lp to the system that didnt previously exist anywhere Sure not every game is likly to have 5 people who have the 50% bonus active but even 8 Lp bonus inflates the system which increases everyones potential ranking

Dr Poro7 votes

Obviously the premades won't get this compensation. Just like you don't get your rerolls back if your premade dodged in ARAM.

Theorex2 votes

Easy fix for flex.

Have it apply to everyone you queue with. Meaning one person, dodges/ AFK's EVERYONE gets that punishment, regardless on if you win or lose (i'm talking about having the reduced LP for the next win/ increased lose of LP for the next lose).

Boom solves the problem.

Elikain5 votes

I do not agree with this. Why is the losing team for "unfair" games being compensated for the loss one of their teammates caused?

If the game ended unfairly, the player who left the match should incur harsher penalties but the game for the team that's playing a 4v5 should also be counted as a regular loss. You don't need a handicap for the next time you win. Unfortunately, these things happen. But they happen very rarely. I don't believe any handicaps for the unfair advantage are needed to be given to the losing team as then one could make an argument that more handicaps should be in the game.

Let's say you lost your promos or dropped out of a tier/division thanks to the AFK player. So what's the compensation in this case? On your next win, give two series wins instead of one (or 3 if you're already being aided by the helper system that's active only to Gold)? Or bring you back to promos, lost tier/division? There's no justice for these cases really. We can only punish the AFK player and that's it. Otherwise, we mess with competitive integrity by granting benefits for the affected players that should've been earned with skill.

Imagine if trash accounts were to suddenly intentionally AFK/leave games for their premade friends, in order to give them double the advantage for wins that these people could get easily while playing in a group? Trash accounts are referring to accounts that the player does not care about, they are only being used to abuse the benefits of the system that gives the unfair teams benefits thanks to their AFK teammates.

  1. The fact that it only happens rarely could be a case for implementation in and of itself. Also, the fact that they happen "rarely" is a vague and subjective statement. They may be prominent for others, even if not the case for you or the majority. Neither does that make them any more fair.

  2. The whole point is that players do not always leave of their own accord, but it still puts the other 4 members of the team at a heavy disadvantage. At this point it is no longer a fair test of skill, either individually or as a team. That's the entire purpose of the Ranking system, so it makes no logical sense to fully deduct points with no compensation from players who had no choice in the afk player or prior knowledge that it would happen.

  3. The "handicap" as you call in no way affects actual in-game performance, nor does it give the losing team a free win or a free win's worth of LP.

  4. Your argument for promotional/series is just you over exaggerating an impractical example to show some weird "next thing you know" slippery slope assertion. A more reasonable solution would be to simply void the game so that it neither helps nor hinders someone in their promos since the promos themselves are meant to assess whether or not you belong in the next division/rank. Something losing a 4v5 doesn't really credit. If they think that's too much, then you don't need to do anything special to promo/series. You still gain/lose LP during your promos/series, and it's reflected in how far below 100 you drop if you fail them.

  5. There are plenty of ways to circumvent abuse. For example, it's already been suggested that the compensation not be given to those who queued with the AFK player.

Elikain2 votes

As i've already said, i do not agree at fully "refunding" losses incurred by AFK players to the rest of their teammates on their next win or not. Not because i'm telling everyone to "suck it up" or "deal with it" but because handing out free LP devalues competitive integrity of the ladder. Even if there is a small portion of these players enjoying these benefits, free LP given this way will inflate their ELO that wasn't deserved - all because they played games where they had a few AFK players during one Season. There are rules to competitions. You win or lose with your team, regardless of the circumstances.

Same is true with a team that has one legitimate feeder that does everything to lose the game. If this team wins that game by some miracle, do you believe it's fair that this feeder also gets a win on his match history without even contributing to it? Since he played with a team and his team won, in a way he also won. Even if he didn't deserve it. There cannot be absolute justice in these cases.

One way to deal with AFK players is already in the game - Remake. But this only potentially prevents unfair games if AFK occurs during the first 3 minutes. If the AFK/DC happens to be from 3+ minutes, 4 other players are forced to waste their time on a sure loss, regardless of what they do. So this unfairness can be combated some other way. Like allowing the game to end prematurely - a system that DotA 2 already has. No game that has a competitive side (that i know of) has compensated players in terms of free ladder points for unfair matches.

PunisherJBY2 votes

i stopped reading after you said "Fully refunding" because he clearly is not talking about fully refunding the team for the lost lp. At best he is asking for half refund. Not even worth reading any more.

Roaranor1 votes

In the case of the legitimate feeder, they are already penalized in other manners, the most extreme case being a permanent ban which inadvertently wipes all of your LP gains.

For all your talk, you've 1) admitted that the games are unfair which means that the integrity of which you speak has already been violated, and 2) haven't given any valid argument for the actual situation, and 3) failed to overlook that these types of systems have already been in place in almost every major sport. Free Throws in the NBA, free advancements in Chess and other seeding systems due to not having enough players (even happened in League Tourneys), free yards for penalties in the NFL. Compensation for unfair conditions don't violate the integrity of the game, but rather serve to offset the unfair aspects that actually violate the integrity.

Elikain1 votes

No, integrity of the games hasn't been violated. Shit happens and the system has ways of dealing with these problems, like punishing the player who disrupts it on purpose. What everyone else is proposing is that the system now should also compensate everyone by mitigating LP losses (that's tied to ELO fluctuations) for unfair games.

A loss is a loss, a win is a win. There are no such things as unfair losses or unfair wins. You might be able to tell this difference but the system itself can't make that distinction as if it could, winning or losing a game would never be tied to the actual team you're playing. Your individual performance would dictate whether you got to win the game or not and every individual in the game would be weighted the same.

ˉˉˉˉˉˉ10 votes

It happened 6 times in my placement, yes, PLACEMENT games.

Six. Fucking. TImes.

Don't give me that "rarely" bullshit. It's actually quite common. At least for me.

Elikain2 votes

Placements are games where you're matched with and against people with a wider ELO range. The reason for garbage games there is pretty much that. I don't really count for placements knowing what my true ELO is but more or less it needs to place me somewhere so i can start the climb. I do sympathize with you as i don't like playing a game where there's an AFK player (regardless of sides) but using Placement games as evidence doesn't make for a solid argument.

But regardless, every game you play should be a 5v5. However, Placement games don't give you LP. They are there so the matchmaker can establish your baseline ELO and that it knows where to place you. So if what OP is true in this case and you're compensated LP for unfair matches, how do you think Placement issue could be resolved? Or do you think you should have 6x stacking 50% LP bonus for wins after you've been placed somewhere? Because this sounds ridiculous to me as the game would literally be saying "well shit son, you got into 6 unfair games so we better treat yout 6 next wins as double wins so you might catch up to some imaginary skill level we don't even know you have".

This compensation system is really doomed from the start. Even if we avoid abuse cases, the system really isn't fair by generating free LP out of nowhere. Imagine if you could print your own money that would be acceptable in your country. Then every individual could do so, devaluing their own country's currency and obliterating the country's economy in mere hours.

ˉˉˉˉˉˉ4 votes

Why are you so obsessed about placement games? I talked about placement games as an example, stating a recent event that angered me. Yes I still have AFKers in my regular games, I just mentioned the placements to show how extreme this issue is, and how influential it is.

This^ It could be abused very easily.

Paquay2 votes

What? No it can't. If you have a trash account that loses or afks on purpose, you're losing more LP than you gain from a win. If you lose 16 LP but gain an extra 8 it's still a net loss.

In the example used, 2 wins = 40 LP. An afk loss + a win = 28 LP. Now why would someone queue with a trash account strictly to try and "abuse" these benefits?

Elikain2 votes

Regardless of the math behind it, what this handicap system is designed to do is mitigate losses incurred by unfair games. A loss is a loss. A win is a win. There are no unfair wins or losses in the system.

One example of an unfair win would be a literal feeder + 4 other people in the same team. The feeder decides to intentionally feed, suicide and do everything in his power to cause a loss but his team by some miracle, still manages to win a 4v5 game. That feeder, even though he didn't contribute to a win at all, technically won as well because he was a part of the winning team. This is a case of an unfair win and the system does not give the feeder less LP(ELO) gains because of his attitude.

There are different solutions that Riot can implement that're more fair than having to be stuck playing a 4v5 where the enemy team doesn't want to end the game but would rather toy with you, instead of handing out free LP points on every corner for unfair games.

Paquay1 votes

I'm not debating the fair/unfair. I simply said its not easily abusable and then gave the math. That was it.

I don't know what the tangent was about.

Elikain1 votes

The tangent was about mitigating LP (ELO) losses for unfair games. And unfair games referring to losing games due to AFK player(s).

If you'd like this to be a thing, than this one instance of mitigating the damage done can't be a one way thing. The team that won a 5v4 should also have reduced LP (ELO) gains because they won an unfair game. This issue then brings a whole slew of other problems that we have to equalize in order to say "this system can be fair for everyone".

Paquay1 votes

Dude, do you have reading comprehension issues? At what point did I say I want this to be a thing? You're trying to put words in my mouth to prove your argument.

I made two very simple comments, neither of which were in favor of, or opposed to this idea. I think you should go back and try to re-read them before going off on yet another tangent.

Zaryelle1 votes

@Paquay, I think he was replying more to Amazox But I'm going to chime in because everyone always says 'this can be abused' to needed features and never actually thought it through. The report system is heavily abused, but people still accept is as working properly (for the most part)

You can easily prevent almost all instances of abuse Amazox/Elikain is referring to.

Prevent the mitigating LP for premades - all premades get the same LP loss/gain, so they cannot abuse the 'one player feeds hard to make us lose less LP' trick.

There needs to be some adjustment when you get uneven teams, or one player who has 10-20 more deaths than everyone else but still got a win. Winning a 4v5 gives you the same reward as winning a 5v5, and that should not be the case.

I personally don't believe having the LP gain based on Win/Losses in a team based game is accurate at all.. but if they're going to stick to doing it that way they need to realize winning a 4v5 (including if all the player did all game was feed) should not be the exact same result as a 5v5.

Paquay1 votes

Oh, well yeah I guess that makes sense. Not sure why he kept replying to me but oh well.

As far as it being abused, yeah there are ways to circumvent that. Players will abuse pretty much anything they can in order to gain an advantage, but that doesn't mean you can't make adjustments to it afterwards. We see this all the time. Something comes out, it gets abused or people find a loophole, it's tweaked, then the problem largely goes away.

Elikain1 votes

The report system doesn't have abuse cases. Because reporting anyone for nothing/mass reporting people doesn't really matter. Bogus reports are discarded and the report accuracy of the player who is doing the mass reporting is being reduced by each false report. That way, the system treats people who abuse the reporting function as less relevant when it comes to the actual result.

Think of this stat as the same stat you had on your Tribunal's profile page "report accuracy". Some people were automatically just pressing "Punish" to fill their quota, for those minor dank IP rewards.

Reporting people aside, your argument does not answer my question about teams who win a 5v4. How would you deal with their LP/ELO gains? The "just" thing here to reduce the losses of the losing team AND to reduce the winning team's gains because they've won an unfair game. Except that's effectively punishing people who won a game and had nothing to do with the AFK player. This system isn't fair towards the winning team at all. One party is being duped.

On the other side of the argument, you can say that winning team should get no losses but only the losing team should have reduced losses or no losses at all (due to an AFK player). But that's effectively wanting of the system to compensate the losing team for the human element in games. It's not its fault someone went AFK. It could very well be bad internet connection on the player's side. It's not your fault and AFK happened. It's not the winning team's fault the AFK happened. Shit simply happens. And in competitive environments, you snooze you lose. There has to be an outcome.

IRL, in sports (let's say football), you can have a team competing in the World Cup Tournament. Your hypothetical team doesn't have any replacements but something happens to one of those players and the team can't play at all. So now you have an incomplete team, no replacements and the competition can't be stopped and schedules moved around because one organization cannot play in the tournament. This team automatically forfeits their position as this counts as a loss and a definitive drop out of the competition.

In League, the same thing is happening. A winning team wins the game, your team loses the game and the AFK player gets punished in the end. There are other ways Riot can help people end those 4v5 games (that can't be Remade) like letting them end way earlier than intended and all players leaving to play another game without wasting their time, instead of messing with LP/ELO gains.

Zaryelle1 votes

You completely glossed over the 'report system doesnt have abuse'. The reason it doesn't have much abuse is because of the restrictions created around reporting that you mention, not because it can't inherently be abused. The exact same type of restrictions can be created on the adjustment of LP/ELO loss/gain during AFKer/feeder games to prevent nearly all abuse. Preventing this type of adjustment for premades who are part of the AFK/int feeder team would eliminate nearly all of the abuse.

You are trying to argue a 5v4 win should get the same reward as a 5v5 win, and that is the entire point we are against that it's definitely not the same thing. Even if it is punishing the winning team more, it's needed to balance out games where a 5v4 team got a free win. It doesn't matter if it's their fault the guy is AFK or not, it matters if the match was actually fair.

The way it is now, the 4v5 is getting punished even if they win, they had to try harder to win and got the same reward as if they were 5v5. That is a much worse situation than the 5v4 getting less reward for winning a game where they had a huge advantage.

some people might have an emergency/computer trouble or whatever, the leaver buster system already punishes them enough.

The punishment isn't that severe. A simple loss of 10 lp for the next ranked game is well-deserved and doesn't actually hurt the player in the long run if they do not afk frequently. If you're getting leaver bustered then don't have so many emergencies. Playing league in the middle of a military operation in Saudi Arabia does not excuse you from leaving since you chose to play. However, losing lp in your next match would deter those that ragequit or whatnot, and people with RARE instances of leaving due to emergencies will barely be affected. If it's so frequent that this lp punishment becomes a major hindrance, you're doing it wrong. The overall message is in the frequency. If you play ranked with computer trouble and an emergency situation, doing so again would be stupid and would show a disregard for other people. Address the issue, and then come back and play. Don't talk about fairness while you frequently leave your team to a 4v5 because "it's just a game." Normals are for "it's just a game" people, and besides, it may just be a game, but you're forcing 4 people to finish the game. The other 4 people can't just afk and start a new game, and for those that play ranked, they lose lp because of your selfish decision. Real life emergency? Okay, that's fine. It seems to be happening every day, and you keep q'ing up for more ranked games right after the real life emergency, only to have another one? No.

I've always wanted a system that gives you more if you win and have an AFK on your team. on the same token, you loose less as well.

The AFKer (and the premades) gets the extra penalty of the loss from the team, and is still considered a loss for the AFKer (and the premades), even if the team did win.

OK we do need a solution, but this is not it. Similar solutions have been posted and they all share a bad exploit: someone taking the fall, like a feeder being pressured to leave (threatened with reports, and weighing a ban against some lp), so that the rest can have more lp. This will also give all the others an excuse for not trying to win anymore, as comebacks and throws are a thing in low elo, plus the afk or d/c can always simply come back. My suggestion, in a buried thread, was a substitute. The game should have game info like other games, and come up in the sever list, and so the sub can decide which game to pick based on the player's rank, champ, position, and state of the game, like at least score, gold, turrets. And please don't assume all afk'ers are people that were doing bad in the first place, and no one would like to fill in their shoes. And if they were too behind due to the time spent afk, the game can show a possible xp/gold amount to be given as compensation, if the sub accepts the game. Imagine the reduced queue time! And game time, for people looking for a potential shorter game.

Okay,

First off if people are being pressured to leave, then they in turn deserve a report anyways but this happens anyways and this doesnt change. There are already people who tell other players who are not doing so well to leave or afk so that they can carry. This here is part of the Toxicity and just because new things happen doesnt mean its going to escalate that.

2nd part about giving people excuses not to win. I already stated that they should not be able to surrender, but keep playing.

AdeBug1 votes

If the pressuring works, then the player leaving cannot report. Yes that is bad, I don't condone it, but it does happen, as you've saw it too. Toxicity has many forms. It's not gonna go away if we implement this, it will just give people 1 more reason to manifest it. Not necessary escalate it.

Not being able to surrender sounds terrible, I remember a few times where the game was hijacked by a troll duo. Why would I want to spend 10 to 20 more minutes in hell? Did that, no ty, never again, but it will prolly still happen. There have been threads about when or if to surr, and there is no clear line when a game is lost, clear cut parameters. But there are some devastating situations that you cannot come back from, like huge number of tower disadvantage, gold, kills, irreparable tiltedness (when is it ever reparable) and/or clear signs that the enemies outskill most if not all members of the team. Idk who would agree to keep the game going like that with no option to ff, and even if you take that away, a team with no trolls would surely just open mid.

And don't get me wrong, I'm all for trying despite the odds, I almost never surrendered because I've seen so many turnarounds, and turrets > kills, but a good percent of people just want to get to that next game, not waste more time on a what seems to be a lost cause.

I think the idea you have looks good but it does need a few tweaks. There should be some type of immunity because every1 afk's due to uncontrollable issues.Eg my ISP contacted me saying there has been some sort of problem in my area which has screwed every sky customer with their internet and i live in london so that is a lot of people. I would hate to be punished for something that is not my fault. Also some tweaks on it not being abused and things should look good.

As long as you're not AFK'ing often this shouldn't affect you much. It's more about rewarding the people who have to suffer the 4v5 then punishing the AFK'er, and no you should definitely not get a win that your team won 4v5 after you left.

I think there should just be a loss prevented for an AFK over 10 minutes.

While I know most people would like to have a Loss prevented I believe this is too much. I know Riot wont agree with that as well.

Perhaps your letter grade should dictate the LP loss a bit too. I really hate losing 20 LP in a game that I get an S grade.

Well while I understand your logic on this, the letter just determines how you did with the champ compared to the masses.

This wouldnt help too much.

Still wonder what @Riot thinks about this also. I am surprised with the number of up-Votes as well as views and comments #Riot has not been in here to comment.
