You opted into that chat, going out of your way to add the person, because you wanted to be involved in the drama.

We do not penalize people for opt-in exchanges.

I don't want to sound adversarial, but this is tough to buy...

The specific case OP is talking about may be borderline, since he just added the other player, but "We do not penalize people for opt-in exchanges" is certainly too extreme. Because I added someone to my contact list months ago, they can say whatever they want to me in total impunity?

As quickly as you added them you can remove them (and if needs be, block them from trying to re-add you). It's a one-on-one exchange that both sides had to agree to keep going. You added them as a "friend", presumably you keep friends who will respect you when you tell them to knock it off.

I add people to DuoQ with. I don't vouch their character first, beyond the fact they behaved correctly in that first game with them.

If they later discover I'm Asian, or Jew, or whatever, and starts hurling racist comments and hate speech, I'm just supposed to block them and let it go? Because it's outside of game, it's OK? That same speech in game would result in an instant perma-ban, but it has absolutely zero consequence as soon as it's outside of the game?

Well... "I don't want to sound adversarial, but this is tough to buy..."

(And for the records, this is not an hypothetical, what-if scenario. It actually happened to me.)

It's not any more "OK" out of game, but it's not punished by Riot.

If you behave inappropriately on a 1 on 1 situation, the other party warns you then cuts you off. If you behave inappropriately in the group conversations of the Boards the moderators warn you then you can get banned from the Boards. If you behave inappropriately in game, the reason people make accounts in the first place, that's when bans from gameplay come out. Just as you can't be permanently banned for a racist Boards post (barring it being tied to something in game), you can't be banned for private chat outside the game. (Pre and post game lobby counts as part of the game)

Riot's behavior is consistent on the subject. I think with the blocked feature it's acceptable. Then again, I rarely friend people I don't know in real life, so take that for what you will.

Sadly nope didn't have to :) he was abusing everyone in the post game lobby after we had won and even said https://gyazo.com/5fa1b589b7001aa3814fd300f3abfb4c which is why i had added him to check if he was alright.

You're being very inconsistent. If you were adding them to check if they were alright, you wouldn't have posted about it here afterwards to ask if they could be banned. This is not what approaching a fellow human being out of the goodness of one's heart looks like.

it looks more like you were amused by their rage in post game chat, decided to add them and message them for entertainment value, and then decided to post about it on the boards to make fun of them even further.

The way you're talking about it in every response on these comments just further supports my conclusion. You did not approach that player out of kindness, and you are an instigator.

One does not need to say anything to be an instigator. The circumstance is evidence enough. You friended them, and rather than console them or try to calm them down you reported them for reacting poorly.

These are precisely the actions of an instigator.

I doubt Riot would take action in this case, since you specifically chose to open contact with them despite knowing that they were toxic.

That doesn't excuse their behavior, but it still stands to reason that you could have chosen not to connect with them.

Additionally, you could have just as easily been tormenting that player to illicit responses that would get them banned. Just one more reason Riot wouldn't punish the person solely based on this.

The fact that your post's title has a smiley-face in it leads me to believe this could very likely be the case. If you had wanted to console the player or calm them down you would have done so rather than get offended and post about it here on the boards.

Proper course of action is always the same, report them in the post-game lobby, and move on.

No action will be taken, sorry. No one has been able to find a single case of someone being banned for direct messages outside of the game. There may be an exception for those spam bots advertising boosting services, but I doubt it.

I believe that pre-game lobby chat and post-game lobby chat are readable to Riot, but they don't count it into their punishments, same goes for you when you add the toxic player just to light them up even more and encourage them to behave like this just for your entertainment. People are only punished for talking like this in the game
