Players abusing pings to harass other players

So you made a mistake or was unable to do anything during a fight then you get spammed with the signals enemies are missing ping. It is not used to signal an enemy is missing but to harass and blame other players after they made a mistake or questioning why they did something.

I found myself in a situation many times where there was NOTHING I could do to save someone or I have to flash away from something and I get spammed with the question mark ping as to why I did not save them or why I flashed when there was nothing else I could do. It is very annoying after being helpless in a situation to then get harassed over it with these question mark pings. This never used to happen and I have noticed it happening a lot more to myself and others during matches.

I would really like to see an option to disable pings from certain players if it was ever possible as pings get abused way too often and at times are not used for their intended purpose.

Is anyone else experiencing this?

Ping spam isn't fun for anyone. You can report someone for harassing you with pings. Make sure to mark them under the harassment option.

That's not the point.

For all other types of communicative toxic behavior, we can mute the toxicity to stop it.

We can't mute toxic pinging to stop it.

You can report players for it after the game (to spare other players in the future), but you can't do anything to stop it during the game (to spare yourself).

The only options you have are to ignore it or to mute your ping volume. Sadly, the second option still lets you see them and prevents you from hearing pings from your non-toxic allies.

Adding a separate mute function (per player) for pings would be useful. Honestly, if the player is ping-spamming their allies, then they aren't going to be using it for anything useful anyways and I'd rather not see or hear them.

Riot doesn't care. They are content banning anyone that speaks out against trolls and toxic asshats. The refuse to deal with the real source of toxicity in this game, and continue to treat its symptoms by banning out otherwise innocent players. Congrats on making people afraid to use the chat, Riot. I am in plat atm, and literally every game is decided by which team is less troll, less toxic, or less boosted. Don't pretend this shit doesn't exist in game-breaking quantities, because it does. And Riot really doesn't much care, because catching people doing shit like this would require a bit of extra policing on their part.

This has nothing to do with the post I replied to. You say Riot is banning people that speak out against trolls, but I've yet to see one person get banned for reporting someone else.

Now, if you're talking about harassing other players in the game, regardless if they're trolling or not, you will be punished for that. Harassment is unacceptable and there is no place for that kind of behavior here. If you want to speak out against trolls, do so using the proper avenues. Report them after the game, create a support ticket if you feel the need, but don't go around thinking it's ok to harass someone just because you think they're trolling. In the end, it makes you no better than them.

I don't know... I think there are probably more constructive ways to do this, but I would agree with the idea that someone would be within the realm of reason to say something to someone who has gone off the rails. It's really up to you if you want to cut the fuse or throw gasoline on it. I'm for the former, myself.

As for punishing players that lash out, I'm ok with putting these people on chat restrictions. If that's how Riot wants to do it, that's fine. Chat restrictions (in my experience) are generally beneficial to players that get too engrossed in the chat, anyways, as they force you to focus on the game instead of the chat. But the fact is that riot isn't just chat banning players that lash out against trolls, they are getting escalated to temp bans and even permabans, and this is borderline unethical.

Edit: not borderline, it's just straight unethical. It's like handing out a death sentence for shoplifting after the 3rd or 4th offense.

It doesn't work on or for everyone, but I've been able to put a roadblock in front of a tilting player just by saying something constructive along the lines of "That really isn't helpful. If X (where X is the player they're upset with) does something (objectively wrong), offer constructive criticism. Help them. Yelling at them or BM pinging them just ensures we have TWO angry players and a lost game."

About 50% of the time the person concedes and the other half they just shut up as if they've been told off by their mom. A very, very tiny percentage of the time the person just goes nuclear and feeds.

I also know a total of zero people who have been banned for telling a toxic player to stuff it. If there are people who are being banned for this, it's probably less that they told them to stuff it and more that they got into a flame war, behaving in the same toxic manner they were criticizing and they deserved the ban they got for dragging three other people along with their BS.

EDIT: It might be worth your while to look up Sky Williams on YouTube and watch his video on DST (Dick Sucking Theory ((No, not literal dick sucking))). It's a good example of how you can alter the way you handle people on tilt to steer them back towards constructive play, or prevent them from tilting in the first place.

Hi, here's one...just got a chat ban for telling off a troll duo that were both int feeding (and then ofc both reported me). And Riot tells me that I am on my way up the escalated punishment ladder, meaning that if I continue to tell off trolls, I will get banned. And this is ridiculous. It may be an empty threat, but given how blatantly nontransparent Riot is about how punishments are decided and specifically what kind of behavior/chat is punished, I really cannot be sure.

Based on some of your comments that I have read here, it doesn't take much imagination for me to envision you using some rather colourful language when speaking to these trolls. Correct me if I'm wrong. And, if I'm not, I would imagine that the ban isn't for telling off trolls, it's for cultivating an environment in which between two and seven guiltless players had to endure the three of you poop-slinging in chat, effectively making you as guilty as the trolls you were telling off.

That wasn't the point of my comment. The point was that depending on which channels are being used between two and seven OTHER people have to read it. No matter who is the intended recipient of your vitriol.

EDIT: Like, imagine someone annoys you in a public place, and you decide that you should 'tell off' the offending person. Everyone around you has to hear whatever it is you said, at whatever volume you said it, with whatever words that you used to say it with. Do they not have a right to be upset?

Your point has been well made long before now. The point those on the other side from you, and perhaps the Tribunal+RIOT members are making is that responding to toxicity with equal toxicity is toxicity. How this simple truism would evade you is beyond my comprehension. You don't get banned for doing nothing wrong.

EDIT: It wouldn't make sense for people who have done nothing wrong to be banned. League of Legends is a free to play game and free to play games generally survive on the good will of the people playing it. It wouldn't be in the interest of RIOT to gain a reputation for punishing those who have done nothing worth punishing.

this no longer exists in any capacity whatsoever, and this is a huge problem. The ban bot can not and will not consider the context of the situation, and this is a problem. In criminal court, context is everything, and that is why a jury will consider all evidence available, not just the evidence that shows guilt.

I'm pretty confident that there is no context in which abusive language could be used that anyone does or should care about. Abusive language is abusive language and bot or human the result should be (and apparently is) the same.

League of Legends isn't the criminal justice system. Its processes and amendment rights don't apply to private companies or how they conduct themselves, nor how they handle people who break their rules and abuse their customers. Comparing the two is, forgive my bluntness, rather dim of you, and, grasping at straws.

In the online ecosystem of League of Legends abusive language is abusive language no matter what context it is used in. There are circumstances in which strong language is used and while it might be offensive to some, it is not inherently abusive. I would wager heavily that these people aren't being admonished, muted or banned for abusive behaviour. In the context that you have alluded that you use strong language, however, there is no need for doubt or further examination about what you were saying, what you meant and who you were directing your abuses at. You incorporated abusive language to, in your words "tell off" trolls and/or players on tilt and in effect, made yourself the troll and/or player on tilt. You received your just desert. The system is not broken. It is working as intended. And it intends to catch players like you, and the trolls you were verbally abusing (whether they deserved it or not).

Trolls will troll whether you yell at them or not. But by allowing them to drag you down with them, you both reward them with the thing they desired (your anger and admonishment) while simultaneously making yourself look like an ass in the eyes of both your teammates and RIOT, and putting yourself in the hot water generally reserved for them (the trolls). Be the better person. Offer constructive criticism or none at all. Wait it out and hope the next game is better (or log to cool off, if that suits you better). If you can't be the better person, your chat mute is deserved until you find the will and self control to be that better person. And until then, you are a toxic player. Justice is being served.

As for the criminal justice system bit, it WAS EXACTLY like the criminal justice system. We had a panel of players that would review the ENTIRE chat log of ALL PLAYERS in the flagged game and then rule "punish" or "pardon". It got scrapped for really a pretty bad reason.

Someone who is ping spamming badly enough that someone would want to mute them is already detrimental to team coordination. Being able to put them on the STFU truck could only help matters in this case, not make them worse.

The Tribunal system has been offline for two years, I think. It's long been a dead issue, and this system has been in place in lieu since the day it went down. Even when it was online, I knew people who went to the Tribunal and hit pardon or punish depending on which day of the week it was just because they wanted the free IP. Even if we assume that that isn't the case, having no clear guidelines for how the players were supposed to handle each case left it up to each person's subjective tolerances to judge. No part of this is how the criminal justice system works.

In the criminal justice system, every defendant is given a fair trial, the ability to defend themselves, someone to go to bat for them in the form of a solicitor guaranteed to them by the sixth amendment, has the option of being tried by a jury of their peers or by a single judge, and once innocence or guilt has been determined a sentence is given based on a range of not less and not more on a per offence basis. The jury is selected carefully by both the defence and the prosecution and is instructed to consider the evidence carefully, leaving their feelings out of it as best they are possible. In the criminal justice system, nobody would be tried or convicted of anything the Tribunal would have handled because they are protected by the first amendment.

The Tribunal does not have to recognize the first or sixth amendments because the Tribunal is not a government system. It threw any number of randos at any given case to vote one way or the other, not requiring any of them to actually read the log or give them any meaningful guidance on how they should handle the case, apart from a sheet at the start page with some outlines for community conduct that were vague at best and worthless at worst. Even if a majority voted in favour of punishment there was a chance that the arbiter who ultimately handled the case would simply admonish the accused or do nothing at all. All without the accused being given an opportunity of any kind to defend themselves. Pretty unconstitutional.

The two systems have little to nothing in common apart from a very, very rudimentary shared framework. None of the meat of the two systems has anything at all in common.

This is the system we have, and it seems to be working just fine. I stand by what I said in my former post. In your case(s), justice has been rightly served by the report system and arbiter, if any that chose your punishment(s).

What about people like me that ping a lot in general to communicate? For instance if my enemy laner leaves I will generally ping "?" on my lane and then some basic blue pings in a line in the direction I think they're going and finally a red danger ping in the lane that is liable to be ganked by said missing champion. Someone like me would show up in the chat log a lot because of my pinging but I don't do it to harass others like the "?" spam on corpse thing if you mess up.

Basically what I'm trying to ask is, if someone decides they don't like me and decide to report me and use this as the option will I get punished automatically by the bot?

When we're talking about ping spam, I literally mean non-stop spamming pings. You're likely not spamming pings the entire time someone is missing, just enough to let your team know, right? I'm talking about the players that hit the ping limit consistently in a game, and once the limit wears off, spamming pings until they hit the limit again.

Thats odd, because someone spam pinged me a week or so ago because i told him to quit pinging. He went on for minutes just pinging me over and over, and I couldnt mute it or anything. He didnt even get punished xD I dont care that much, because I dont have thin skin like most people in this community, I thought it was funny but at the same time annoying.

It doesn't read it. And it won't ban you for it either.

Even if, and that's a if, the pings are read, it can't distinguish it as toxicity unless it is blatantly shown.

Like how the system will detect you intentionally feeding if you just run down mid, but it won't if you just purposefully play horribly and pretend you're bad at the game.

Unlike with the intentionally feeding case, however, most people who use pings as a means of toxicity use it because they know they can't be caught with it. They're toxic, but they care for their account, so they use pings instead of just outright flaming you. Most int feeders don't care anymore, so they just do whatever they want without regards to the consequences.

I feel like either the majority of players aren't aware that ping spam is reportable as harassment, or they don't have much faith that offenders are actually getting punished for it.

Sooner or later there might be a punishment handed out exclusively for ping spam on a high profile person like a streamer, youtuber, pro, etc. and that would bring boards and reddit into it, but until then it feels like ping spam is too far-spread and hardly anyone realizes they can be reported for it. This seems like something Riot should do a PSA on.

Reporting isn't the same as giving us the tools we need to deal with it in game. That's the whole reason "muting chat" came about. It's one thing to report someone after the fact, but we still should have the tools to keep it in check while it's happening.

I have the ping audio set to mute.

I check the map mostly every 3 to 10 seconds.

Its people's fault they don't check the reason why you or anyone can't help them.

People seem to forget that there is a mana bar hud feature above most champions in the game. They also need to take into account how successful their ally has been, if they have been getting caught in jungle or destroyed in lane by whatever reason then there maybe a point where there is nothing that you can do.

Like a kha keeps getting 1v1 invaded by lee sin with perfect timing and kha gets far behind by a better enemy plus takes his camps.

If jungler takes too long farming scraps in his jungle or comes to lane to farm up, his team mates will go full retard mode and start raging at him/her which is bloody stupid I've seen this to my allies and enemies before.

One mid laner got super salty blaming his/her jungler and bot lane for feeding and she/he couldn't hold down the first mid tower for long but the bot and jungler was either unsucessful or couldn't attend to mid lane and this person didn't take into account that their allies against my champion comps or player skill cannot be beaten just yet and they rather not feed us so they retreat to heal in base and pick up some gold in jungle or other lanes while one guy who is defending for nearly 2 minutes is just flaming against a 1v3 or 1v4.

Players should keep priority on exp and money sometimes rather than just focusing all on one lane or objective it can just get you easily destroyed again.

TL;DR I have mutes on pings at all time, Players are selfish jerks, they lack common sense to quickly read mana, hp bars and cooldowns on certain ultimates.

If you want to mute your HUD too I can give you a mod that does that. Game feels so much quieter without "CANNOT CAST THAT SKILL RIGHT NOW".

I run into this issue too :/ even made a post about in awhile ago haha.

I wish there was a mute ping option, but I can understand why Riot can't really implement it or enforce it.

Most we can do is report and specifically note that they were spamming pings, but I do wish there was something else a player could do instead of muting all ping sounds from the game.

I experience this issue maybe every third game when some teammate is tilting because you should have saved them. I'm so thankful you made this thread, it really feels like more people care about it. When I play and someone pings you can't do anything about it which really bothers me. The mute would be amazing. Riot please notice this thread and do something about it or people will stop playing league because of all these spammers. DO SOMETHING!

Found this thread AFTER I created my own for the very same thing.

Frankly, I couldn't care less if someone might have something useful to convey, maybe, sometime down the road. With my temperament, if someone has behaved demonstrably like as asshat badly enough, consistently enough, that I want to mute their speech AND pings, it is more probable than not that their vindictive pinging is more harmful than that one moment of zen and clairvoyance where they ping something useful does good.

There are three other sets of eyes, four if I count my own. If none of those eight eyes saw the thing that the fifth dickhead on tilt might have pinged about, we deserve to be ganked. item 3361

As a Pantheon main my ult triggers an "on the way" ping, after thousands of games (in a row) I can tell you 1 ping is not usually enough to grab someones attention. I myself find repeated pings as the best way to make sure they know I'm coming and I want them to run into where I am using my ultimate. This is a very fast paced game and players can often be distracted or not understand the intensity of how important something is quickly enough (especially in normal matches or low ranked matches). More pings means a higher chance of successful communication. The ping limit is already set kinda low @ 5-6 pings per minute. Try and think of the volume of pings as an indication of how important it is rather than a personal slight against you. If I ping once I got the kill in the bag, you are welcome to come grab an assist, but if i ping till my pings time out, I need you to help me and I need it now or I will die for what would otherwise be an amazing play. The same measure can be applied to them using the "?" ping to disagree with a decision you made, 1 ping might be for placing a ward in a poor spot, 5 pings might be that you didn't use your ultimate as Amumu in a clutch team fight when it was clearly visible it was available in the HUD and everyone died for it (making plays that relied on it).

Yep I have Riot needs to allow pings to be muted when a player is muted as a second option I have to type /mute all, and turn off my sound which means I can end up feeding the enemy because I cant hear wards or enemy skills being used.

LOL used to have this feature in it many many years ago.

I don't care, If I will dig this thread from its grave, but Riot! I need to hide ALL pings! Muting them doesn't work at all, because you are able to see thousands of pings and chat pokes. Today I lost the game, because of that. I couldn't focus at all.
