Tribunal. . . . Where has it been?!

The Tribunal - Maintenance

The Tribunal was a great system. It allowed members of the community to review cases when people where reported for misconduct. It also allowed us to see directly the results of reporting toxic players. It would let you know when the majority of the community agreed or disagreed with the report. The player would be reprimanded if the majority of people reading their case voted agree with report. Then the admins would determine the type of punishments.

When I first started playing league of legends I remember the tribunal was one of my favorite things to participate in. It allowed me to see the result of reporting toxic players. I enjoyed being able to participate in making the decision on whether behaviors were toxic or not. It gave me hope that reporting a toxic player at the end of a game actually meant something. However, now I do not get to see that result directly.

For the past 3 years it seems like the tribunal has been in a constant state of maintenance. Is there ever going to be an opportunity were the community is able to participate in tribunal again or not because the link at the bottom of the website has constantly given me false hope.

What do you all think? Do you want to see the Tribunal return for the community?

EDIT : This has nothing to do with the Singed Support smite thing. I actually didn't learn about that until after I posted this. This is just about Tribunal by itself.

The old Tribunal was just awful. More often than not people would just click punish and get it right at least 75% of the time. Not to mention players would get punished for cases that happened months previous.

The latest information that we have is this comment from Ghostcrawler.

wish we could still see the old cases, one I got from some tryndamere was so fucking good, it was TT and he was counting every time someone "killstole" from him, he just kept saying things like "1 2 3 4 TIME FUKEN KS ME BASTARD LUX BASTARD ASHE REPORT BASTARD ASHE 1 2 3 4 5 TIMES KS"

I love reading Tribunal's because they always allowed for some entertainment. When you are part of that game, its obviously annoying. But from an outside perspective, its really funny. I love watching funny Tribunal cases on Youtube as well.

To be honest, the Tribunal wasn't that effective. It was great in terms of letting people feel like they were being actual contributors when it came to player behavior, but the success rate and problems it had weren't that effective.

It took forever for a case to finally get reviewed and finished towards that player being judged. Sometimes even weeks or months after the incident they were reported for. There weren't reform cards, so the majority of the time players had no idea what they were being reported on.

Not only was time a huge issue, but IP farmers were also an issue. Players could just auto press "Guilty" and receive IP without even reading the logs or making an accurate judgement. This would cause players who didn't actually deserve punishment to get punished since enough players would spam the Tribunal by banning just to get free IP.

There were so many false cases and issues with the Tribunal that I'm glad Riot put it on hiatus until they improve it. What we have now, the Instant Feedback System, is actually much better success wise than the Tribunal ever could be. There are barely any errors when it comes to punishing the wrong player, and it helps weed out false reports towards players that didn't break the ToS or Summoner's code. Since there's no free IP out of it either, players can't farm by reporting everyone and screwing with the statistics.

However, IFS does have issues with visibility and letting players feel like they're actually helping and contributing. Which is something Riot has said they want to look into whenever they revamp the Tribunal.

But for now, the old Tribunal will not be coming back, and I'm actually okay with that.

Lot of valid points here. If there was a way to reform the old tribunal system that would be great. For instance, give each case a set time limit before final review by the admins. This way we can participate, and only get rewarded by voting for what the admin says was the appropriate response. or some way to prevent the IP farmers. but get us involved as well.

To be honest, there should be no reward in the Tribunal. Helping the community should be it's own reward, so giving incentives will just create another issue like the previous Tribunal had.

A time limit would be good, but again, unless enough people participate there could be cases that end without anyone voting. It's a possibility since not everyone opts in for free "volunteer" work. You and I may have enjoyed it, but not everyone did, nor did they care enough.

If the Tribunal were to return, I think it should stay similar to the IFS, but open "Grey Area Cases" to a public forum to get a better look on what is accepted and not. It should also be a privilege to use the Tribunal, so if you are known for filing tons of false reports, you would not be allowed to vote in the Tribunal.

But yeah. I really just think if Riot could get the IFS to help give better feedback on which of your supports were successful or not I think it would be perfect. This could also help other players know exactly what is acceptable behavior if they find out someone they reported got punished.

Perhaps a report review card? Like your success rate, accuracy, and a brief chatlog of the players you reported since let's face it, no one is going to remember the flaming asshole you reported a week ago.

Just my ideas though.

I like that report card concept. Let me see if the ppl i report are actually getting punished for being that way. Because the current system seems like report and forget.

I think it could work so long as the names of the reported summoner are censored out. There's no reason to ostracize a player for their poor behavior, but it is good to let the players know their reports matter when they are successful. Basically, a statistical report card would work wonders. Maybe once every two weeks or so we could receive one showing how effective our reports are and how we've been doing.

Something simple that can be easily automated really.

I don't want to remember every single summoner I reported, but I do want to know if my report did matter.

They used to be censored out. It would say "Reported Player" and "team Ashe" or "enemy Ryze" etc

Yes, in the Old Tribunal it did censor out the names. I was talking about if they implemented a new report card system to coincide with the IFS system :)

If the Tribunal was such a horrible system, then why are people getting warnings for perma-bans for playing Support Singed? I watched this players game play and they never double jungled... they occasionally roamed but stuck with their ADC early and mid game. The admins are wrong in this case for once. The Tribunal offered the admins some corroboration to their judgment.

Currently Tyler1 still plays LoL even though he was supposed to be perma-banned. Just this week he posted a video of him playing against Phreak. Oh yeah this current system is working just fine.

There are a lot of factors at play when it comes to permanent bans. They do not just randomly happen, unless it involves Finance or Security. Chances are the players reporting these are not giving the whole picture, and they may have had previous punishments they did not want to share.

And if we're talking about that streamer who started this whole "Singed Support Smite" phase, then there was also a lot going on with that case that players don't seem to realize. It was more of a behavioral issue than it was playing off-meta.

Playing off-meta will not and cannot get you banned, but being a jerk, inconsiderate towards your team, and "stealing" lanes can get you punished. It's all about how you behave and how you treat others in a game.

This is a behavior issue, not a gameplay issue. So I hope that makes sense.

I swear by Odin's Spear I watched that player's games. They never had an attitude issue, they never miscommunicated their intentions or lacked in communication, they never abandoned their ADC early to mid game. They did the majority of their roaming 20 minutes or more into the game.

People are really either misinformed, lying, or have that one player confused with all the copycats that followed. I cant emphasize that enough, and a number of YouTubers and Streamers are pissed with Riot Admin on this because they followed their progress.

I understand what you mean, but again, you and I don't have all the facts when it came to the reports and from Riot's side of this issue. There are a ton of copy cats, and I'm sure there are worse offenders out there, but you and I don't know all the information when it came to the "epicenter" of the issue, so to speak.

I'm not saying that player is a horrible person, but I can't back them up either since I don't have all the information that could have happened. All I have is what Riot put out, and from what I remember reading it was behavioral/not cooperating with their team that got Riot to be involved. Also because of the massive reports that player received, but you get what I mean.

If anything I'm honestly neutral in this case. I don't believe for a second he was punished for playing Singed Smite/Support, but I definitely believe there was more going on that we aren't aware of nor that we'll know. Perhaps I'm just a cynical person, but I never trust what people say online 100% when it comes to being a "victim" or "unjustly punished".

I think there was more to it than we'll ever know, but I'm not going to sit around here and bash the guy or Riot when I don't have all the info. Riot handled it, so I'm just going to leave it alone. Watching videos, making threads, and overall complaining about it wont fix anything.

I honestly have no idea about Singed game, it seems to be a hot topic right now. Im simply talking Tribunal, uninfluenced by anything else lol.

I think it's "hot" because it really is quite a peculiar case. There is no black/white ruling on it. It's not obvious to the public why it happened, so it's really hard to judge from the outside. I only seldom know about it, but mostly because I just don't feel the need to dive in deeper. Hence why I am just neutral on that case and not be bothered.

I understand why it's causing an issue, but I just don't feel the need to side with either /shrugs.

Kinda feels like tyler1 all over again, but this time more ambiguous lol.

My guess is they used data from the tribunal to help train an AI to recognize what was going on in the games.

tribunal seems like it would be fun. but as i understand it they removed it in part because the majority of players were just clicking punish no matter what because it is funny to see people get punished. and the less they deserve it the funnier it is.
