1: I think it's evident that this is just lighthearted friendly banter 2: I think it's evident that I wasn't deliberately trying to offend anyone or make them feel bad about themself 3: If this is my first ever chat offense, isn't a 14 day suspension overkill?

Hate speech is not friendly banter. It is one of riot's zero-tolerance policies, and earns an immediate 14-day ban on the first offense.

Doesn't matter if it's your friend, or he's in Discord with you, or if he finds it hilarious -- if you expose other players to that language, it's in violation of the rules unless they specifically opt-in. Use the /whisper command if you want to insult your friends, or queue as a 5-man and use team chat. Don't force other players to see that language.

It doesn't change the fact that if it really is his first chat offense, 14 day ban does seem too much. Why not just a chat restriction? Seriously, I don't know the guy, but he seems alright. Also, there is a mute button for people who do not want to see that language.

The mute button is a shield to avoid having to see it further. It is not an excuse to allow all language.

The reason it's a zero-tolerance offense is because that language is hate speech. That's not an "oops" moment. It's intentional use of a word steeped in decades of homophobia and hatred.

No, he got banned for calling someone an abbreviation for a 6-letter slur intended as an insult against the gay community. There's an important difference.

There's no realistic scenario where somebody is actually talking about a fellow player's sexuality in League. Calling somebody "gay", whether or not it's through a slur, is obviously meant as an insult to that person, and invoking hatred for a minority group in the process.

Not... really? I mean, "trap" isn't a slur in any context. I get the use for it that you're referencing, but "trap" is so commonly used in its literal sense (Cait traps, Jhin traps, setting a trap for the enemy, etc.) that I can't imagine it being a major problem in a game of League. Hell, if you point-blank called me a "trap" in a game, I'd probably just assume they meant something like ganking my lane was a bad idea, or similar.

%%% is likely the f...g....t which is a homophobic term and falls under Riots 0 Tolerance policy which always leads to either a 14 day ban or permaban depending on previous punishments.
