I submitted a ticket to Riot, but I would also like to post it here in hopes of getting more visibility and maybe some actual answers to my questions:

I reported a player in the second to last game I played in for flaming me. I ended up receiving a chat ban for 25 games. This is my second chat ban. In both of my bans, while I may have used "inappropriate language" I was only responding to someone who was flaming me. In this last game I was 3/1 as a support (and I was not intentionally stealing kills) and my adc was the only negative KDA player on our team. She started calling me trash and telling me to never support, etc. Now, I responded by using terms that some people don't respond well to, but I do not see why I am being discriminated against for my lexicon. This is not a professional setting. This is not a setting for small children. I do not see any reason why Riot is trying to dictate player's word choice.

From here, I have three main questions:

  1. Why does Riot insist on punishing people who have good teamwork (you can see I was cooperating with the rest of the team who agreed with me) but choose to use language that Riot disapproves of? How does this go along with freedom of speech?

  2. Will this chat ban affect my end of season rewards? I have spent considerable time and money this season on both mine and my husband's account and I can guarantee that if I do not get the things I put time into you will be losing even more players. Things like this are why players are leaving League.

  3. Why did Riot remove Tribunal? Things like this never happened when actual people reviewed each case.

  1. Freedom of speech doesn't work that way. You can still be held responsible for what you say. Freedom of speech protects you from being prosecuted by the government for what you say. Riot is perfectly within their rights to deny you access to their content.

  2. If the chat ban is still there when the season ends, yes.

  3. Retaliation was never an accepted excuse for poor behavior.

Freedom of speech absolutely does work that way. It means that as long as I am not obstructing someone's life, liberty or pursuit of happiness I can say what I please. I didn't threaten anyone and any offense anyone took was on their part.

And how is retaliation "never an accepted excuse for poor behavior"? Do you not think it's more poor behavior to flame someone and harass them with pings than to call them an idiot? I don't understand your (lack of) logic.

No It doesn't. Riot is well within their rights to kick you out of their game for whatever reason they please. This includes your behavior. It's their game.

The logic of the matter is; when two people are fighting each other in an establishment, both of them are likely to get thrown out if neither seemed to be making any effort to avoid the fight. You have the option to mute, halting any and all chat from them reaching you. I agree pings are still an issue, but there's also an option to mute all pings.

The point is, you're not helping the situation that the rest of the players now have to deal with, you're throwing more oil on the fire.

Riot is against this and only your actions matter no matter what anyone says.

Being a team player doesn't give you immunity to flame other people. Bad language is acceptable as long as it's not meant to insult someone. League of Legends doesn't have to follow the free speech laws. They can determine their own rules.

Will this chat ban affect my end of season rewards? Things like this are why players are leaving League.

Chat restrictions only void rewards while in effect. Meaning it won't affect them after you're done with them by the seasons end.

Why did Riot remove Tribunal? Things like this never happened when actual people reviewed each case.

Tribunal is getting a rework but it's far off the radar.

Okay so if you insult me by flaming me for being "a trash support" tell me to "uninstall my game" and use general pings to ping me the entire game to the point that other teammates complain in game, that's not insulting and Riot doesn't care. If I use "the f word" for emphasis to explain how idiotic someone's rage is, I get banned? This logic is completely illogical. Just because they didn't cuss doesn't make my crime worse than theirs. As I said above, I didn't threaten anyone, I didn't degrade anyone, I simply said "raging for me leashing" (which is why they started raging) "is f*cking idiotic" BECAUSE IT IS. I'm not going to take the time to type out "dear sir, please calm down and refrain from attacking my personal decision to leash the jungle"

It's just ridiculous to get punished for my language when someone else was flaming me FOR NO REASON.

No, it makes your "crime" exactly the same. Person A insulted you, and you insulted Person A back. Your language has nothing to do with it, it's the intent.

You're right, that is extremely stupid. But the correct response is to not type anything. You need to find some other way to direct your anger. For me, I just say it out loud. I'll say "Wow, one minute in, and this jungler already f**** sucks." But I won't type it. Just roll your eyes, mute him if necessary, and remember to report him at the end of the game.

Again, two wrongs don't make a right. Just because he was flaming you doesn't mean you can flame him back, it just means you'll both get punished if you try.

Exactly. There's no repercussions for flaming as long as you don't cuss then? That's absurd.
