Getting Hacked: A Benadryl Jackson Story
After a long hiatus, I returned to League for a single game and had a great time. A few days later I got an email from Riot about a Chat Restriction regarding things I never said, and sure enough, there were several new games in my match history that I didn't recognize. They were mostly ranked placement games for the new season, 5/6 of them losses, ouch! My saved up IP was all gone too.
After performing some long overdue maintenance, I found several keyloggers on my machine, cleared them, then proceeded to get my account back. I was sad to discover that current Riot policy could do nothing to reverse those losses, return my IP, or negate the chat ban, but I understand their position. It would be nearly impossible to fairly investigate each hacking case, given how massively popular this game has become. I still have some Rioters on my friend's list, but it feels wrong to ask them for special treatment.
League isn't a huge part of my life anymore, but I still feel so...violated. I took great pride in my account and my commitment to upholding the Summoner's Code, even before there was a Summoner's Code.
This silver lining to all this is that my computer is now clean - I could have suffered far worse than a compromised League account. I'd never been a victim of hacking or identify theft, and so I become lazy with my online security. Ultimately, that hacker taught me a valuable lesson for a fairly small price, and for that I'm thankful.
