Enough with the hate speech

Hey everyone,

_I'm sure this isn't your first time reading something like this, or even thinking this yourself, but here's to stopping internet abuse and hate speech because it's actually so stupid. _

I take no credit for the linked discussion up there, but even though it was posted a year ago, I still think they're completely right in saying that we've HAD ENOUGH WITH THE HATE SPEECH.

Honestly...just think about it...we spend good time with friends on League or by ourselves trying to queue up into a fun game on the Rift, maybe even buy a few skins, icons here and there, supporting our favorite game and LCS teams, but then one person comes by just to ruin it. I understand...this type of thing happens everywhere, even in real life; but what's made the world safer and more enjoyable is peace and the message that we don't tolerate this kind of behavior.

It's stupid that people think they can talk slander and profanity at another person simply because they're sitting (or standing if that's what you're into) behind a screen with their hands on a keyboard. We obviously can't catch every person and punish every person who says the wrong thing once or twice, but we have to get it into our minds that: THIS WAS THEIR CHOICE ! ! ! !

Calling you stupid, dumb, annoying, bad at the game; I get it. It happens to all of us. They're frustrated, but extending the insults past simple language like that, or repeating it multiple times, is simply unacceptable. That's not how we win games and that's certainly not how we should be 'enjoying' our League experience. There's honestly NO excuse for anyone to justify themselves spending minutes upon minutes typing stupid things to you. None of us deserve this and I believe Riot REALLY needs to get on top of this.

I understand that Riot is busy doing things like game development, character design, graphic improvement, champion balancing, etc. These are all very important aspects of the game that we love and absolutely keep up the amazing work, but putting some more control on the League of Legends community is something I find absolutely necessary.

Riot certainly has control over the rules and guidelines that we have to follow. There's a terms of agreement that everyone has to accept before starting the game. Even if they don't read it, they should still know that abusive and offensive verbal behavior isn't acceptable anywhere in the world. We (including everyone at Riot) needs to take control of the League community and no longer let the toxic players abuse and define us any longer. Set some more guidelines, invest more time in investigating reports and chat logs, set some "trigger words/phrases" which call for an investigation of the chat log even without reports (because frankly, reports aren't 100% reliable).

I know this seems like a lot of work to be done from the game developers, but I never said this was completely up to them. If there were only a "honorable behavior" option available to put more emphasize on the importance and value of good sportsmanship, we could better judge a person's honor in the game! Honor shouldn't just be for opponents who do well. I believe that there could be a system for 'League moderators' who are regularly playing, have a good history of being honored in this manner, a seldom report rate for verbal abuse/hate speech and all-in-all show commitment to the game, to be selected out of player volunteers who would now be given a larger voice within the player moderation and behavior department of League of Legends. These moderators would be able to invest the necessary time to actually read the chat log in detail and comprehensively and make the judgement based on the guidelines of the League community. Just as people know not to speak rudely to "Riot xxxx", they will also now know not to verbally abuse anywhere else because they never know who might be a League moderator.

There simply isn't enough emphasis on the importance of good sportsmanship in the game. There isn't enough significance on the severity of a report. People aren't heeding the report system as an actual threat and this shows the lack of control on the community that we have.

In conclusion, the report system is lacking. We can't control the type of people who join the League community, but we can control the type of behavior we allow and disallow. We can't control the words they plan to say before they say it, but we can control the voices we raise and the actions we take after they make the CONSCIOUS CHOICE to abuse another player in the community. Of course AFKing in game is annoying, sure, scripting ruins the game for others, I'm sure we're also fed up with that item 3070 Jax and the item 3089 Riven we see in ranked matches, but most of all, I can definitely say that I am fed up with the amount of verbal discrimination, abuse and vituperation found in the current League community.

Thanks to everyone if you got this far into my post!

The idea in concept is good, except the fact you're allowing a human to make decisions is inherently horrible, as it will always be unavoidably biased one way or another, and what people consider punishable will vary from one to the next.

While I am never one to condone insults or slander, much of this seems, well, excessive.

I don't really understand the point of 'taking over' the community, we are already part of the community and impact it as participating members. The only reason a person would need to 'take it over' would be because the community at large does not completely share that person's values, and if this is the case why would anyone want them forcing their values on everyone else? Riot can do this because they own and operate the game, but I don't really see why anyone else would have the right to do so.

Also there is no need to let the actions of others 'define' you, despite your comment I certainly don't feel that way about myself. You are your own person with your own thoughts, ideas, values, etc. There is no reason that you should feel that others actions reflects poorly on yourself.

More importantly I don't care for the idea of representatives being selected for the community to police it. I do not see this system ending in anything but abuse of power, silence through fear, and fulfilling certain player's vindictive desires after a verbal slight.

After all, the people who truly exhibit toxic behavior already show no fear of the repercussions that exist, why would they suddenly be cowed by these new ones? The only people this will effect are those that are already unlikely to be a problem, that exhibit rage or outbursts with such infrequency that it would usually be discarded. But in this circumstance it will be escalated because it happened to be caught by a 'moderator' who will be able to use their arbitrarily given privilege to feel assured in the thought that they were able to strike back at the person who slighted them. How does this help anyone?

For example of a few problems: How will this solution solve toxicity at lower levels? That is certainly a problem, but what moderators will be down there? If they even were down there what real punishment is being accrued by banning a level 10 account when they can just make a new one? The threat of negative behavior is already the prospect of being banned, how does this help at all?

All in all this appears to me to be a rather unnecessary system and a strange attempt at a call to arms. This system won't solve anything except make certain players feel self-righteous while exacerbating community resentment. I do not want this system as it is currently described.
