Why is this community so soft?

Am I the only person who grew up on halo? with headsets? where the enemy team could yell profanities at you as they came through and rekt your whole squad? What happened to those days? What happened to the days where gaming was competitive and people enjoyed talking a little friendly trash? This community, on a massive scale, is filled with people who can't handle the competitive nature of a pvp video game. Yes you heard that right, there are video games where you can go play in a field with unicorns under a rainbow and catch butterflies and no one will ever kill you or call you a noob. Maybe I'm the crazy one, but I don't see the fuss in getting all riled up over what people type or say online. Yea go ahead, call my mom a whore and tell me that I suck a three foot horse dick.... that's your opinion, and I FUCKING RESPECT IT :)

In case you forgot, people in the US could work two full time (40 hours a week) dead-end jobs for minimum wage on government support and still be unable to support themselves, much less support their families, see a doctor or improve their outlook on life. This is ignoring any personal issues such as being unable to see friends, family, having relationship issues, mental health problems, worrying about keeping their job, worrying about politics, just to name a few.

Most people do not want to play a game (in which the goal is universally to relax or escape from your problems) to have some ten year old tell us they fucked our mothers and to go kill ourselves because we aren't Diamond III Smurfs that are crushing our opponents or feeding literally every kill to our ADC/Mid/Riven.

It's about respect. there are things probably going on in that person's life you can't even imagine, chances are they don't need you being an asshole*-even if it is a joke to you-*to make their lives any worse.

I understand where your coming from but you also have to realize a lot of the people that grew up in halo and talk trash (myself included) are all fully mature by now. That was a decade ago. I don't even talk trash anymore.

I agree

There's "a little friendly trash talk", then there's what gets you reported for. Fun fact: it's not trash talk if you're directing it to your teammates.

Teemo saying "whoops! did I do that?" in all chat when someone dies to a shroom while escaping is friendly trash talk.

Its not that we can't handle it, its that we choose not to accept it.

SmokedAlmonds11/24/2015, 10:53:47 AM4 votes

I think you are misunderstanding peoples position. Some certainly are "soft" or that they seriously affected by others words. That is not everyone and in my experience not even most. Most people can handle it, they just have no interest in doing so. Its a game, people do it for entertainment, to enjoy themselves.

I played halo, I yelled at more than my fair share of people and groups leading raids in WoW. But there is a time and a place. Not everyone wants that. Just because some communities tolerate, accept, or encourage certain behavior doesn't mean that everyone has to or even should.

TLDR; its not always about being hurt, its just about the experience people want.

Because we have no obligation to put up with the results ofwhatever dysfunctional life you may have to think it's okay to talk to people like that.

Learn to behave like a normal human being.

Overconsumption of carbohydrates and not enough exercise would be my guess. Well, at least that's the reason why I'm so soft.

fatherdarius: Is built like Gragas . YMMV :D

The problem is these things are associated with profanity and if it were not there would be no profanity, the entire point of Riot's influence on the LoL community is to show they take summoner's rift as seriously as a basketball court or soccer field.

If all sports were traditionally played while wearing masks in the ancient times, what we have today in computer games would be what we'd have in almost any activity. It's a goal for almost all game developers to defy the larger web culture of tolerating verbal abuse and make an impact on how people treat each other ingame.

Its different on league because they are actually trying to shape their community and make it nice.

I probably should have prefaced all of this with "For a guy who takes video games pretty seriously, I spend the majority of my time at Phish (and other) concerts doing acid and giving out free hugs"

Vianci11/24/2015, 10:47:12 AM1 votes

As JARmates said. I didn't grow up with the head set trash talk (nice abbreviation - hstt :D ) but i know what you mean, we used to do it but when playing outside, with friends. The point is you don't know who is behind the screen - we don't give a crap about what anyone says but some might do. You probably had a situation when you had a bad day and then something small (like a cat meowing) flipped your switch and you had an outburst. Worse things can happen with insecure people so let's stay safe with that. That being said - voice chat would be good for some friendly toxicity between friends.

Am I the only person who grew up on halo?

Halo and CoD are widely regarded as having utter cesspools of the worst slime that passes for himanity imaginable for a fanbase. That doesn't justify any lesser toxicity in any way.

What happened to the days where gaming was competitive and people enjoyed talking a little friendly trash?

friendly trash?

Theres so much straight up toxicity in this game that you don't really expect 'friendly' trashtalk, just straight up BM. Especially if you are tilting. And its online so you can't really tell if its friendly or not...

ModPrandine11/24/2015, 10:29:42 PM

There's trash talking, and then there's flat out bashing/inappropriateness. This is a game that people play for fun, and the majority of us don't want to have to put up with people who think that it's perfectly acceptable to rage and spew insults and hate speech at others when thing don't go their way. It's also important to remember that what might be okay and acceptable in your circle of friends isn't necessarily acceptable with other random people. Even in professional sports (both regular and Esports) the moment you start bringing insults and the like into the picture is when you've crossed the line and have gone too far.

What allot of people don't seem to understand is that times change. It might have been acceptable to rage constantly online to random strangers back then, but it's not acceptable to do so today. To me I feel that the people who think that being a jerk is and should be perfectly acceptable are in a state of denial and are too focused on/buried in the past to see the future ahead of them. If they would look at the here and now then chances are they might understand why the behavior considered acceptable in the past isn't acceptable now. If they refuse to do so then that's their problem, not ours.

TL;DR It's not a matter of "being soft", being a "10 year old white knight" or whatever other excuse banned troll ragers like to come up with, it's simply a matter of common sense. If you wouldn't say it to someone's face then you shouldn't say it online. Times have changed and the majority of people don't want to play with or against people who enjoy raging at others when things don't go their way. It is definitely possible to communicate with others without being a jerk-you just have to put in the actual effort to do so.
