First Punishment I Received is a Instant Perma Ban

EBOJWuyyjH··4 votes·20,656 views

My account was immediately permanently suspended after a game due to the egregious nature of my behavior in humiliating other players and using the homophobic f-word. I am really sorry and I think I should be fully responsible for that. I am a foreigner who came to United States three years ago, and English is not my language. I have been trying very hard to learn this language. Yet I didn't understand the homophobic word I was using is that offensive and untolerable until now as I have seen and heard people using that word in my daily life. I didn't intent to use that word to targeting anybody for their sexual orientation. I feel responsible for my behavior and I would gladly accept and any other punishments other than permanently ban. I like this game. I have invested a lot of time and money into this game (I know this does not justify what I did). I have been a good player for most part of my past three years. I have never received any punishment in league of legends prior to this one, not even chat/ranked restriction. I found this post written by one of the riot employee "punishments for negative behavior in League should accomplish three things: Encourage moderately or occasionally negative players to reform,Shield players from negative experiences, and Remove players who won’t reform from League." . I think myself as a "occasionally negative players," and I don't think I am hopeless. I promise you that I will reform. I am usually very good at restrain myself, but I had a terrible day that day and was drunk and sleepless at 8 AM when I played that Game. Now I look back, I find my chat logs for that game was very disturbing and bad, filled with constant insult and repetitive usage of aforementioned homophobic words. I do understand my behavior in that game is punishable/up to the standard by permanently banned, but I just hope I could have another chance to redeem myself. Now I have looked through a lot of posts online and had a better understanding of the tribunal system. I just wish someone from Riot can take another look into my case, and take the clean record of my past games into consideration, so I can learn from my mistakes and improve from there. Don't abandon me riot please!

I am truly sorry! Sincerely,

Casterly Rock (Go Lannisters!)

I can appreciate the fact that you realize what you did was wrong, and have apologized to your fellow players. However, our policy is that perma-bans are ... well, permanent. We will not go back retroactively and apply different punishments or unban accounts unless it was due to a system error or oversight. This was an example where an extreme case skipped all other punishments. We have a zero tolerance policy for hate speech.

scazzman4 votes

this policy is rather unfair. and this robotic approach to toxicity i think only adds fuel to the fire. especially when the people getting banned often arent the worst offenders just the most reported

I read the chat. Trust me, cases that are direct perma-bans are NOT innocent victims of reports.

I disagree with you whole heartedly that having a zero tolerance policy regarding hate speech is unfair.

As long as the "Hate speech" applies evenly to all that use hatred in their statements (Ex: A feminist that says "Kill all men" perma-banned instantly, or a homosexual man that speaks out against Catholicism with hateful statements like "Catholicism is for idiots" perma-banned instantly) then I believe your system is just and fair. Although I am strongly libertarian leaning and Riot is leftist/feminist leaning... I support your system and believe you are doing things fairly. I know your people work very hard and they have my admiration.

I just hope you will always be even handed rather than give special privileges to certain groups. All hatred should be punished equally; The rules should be applied evenly to all.

this is what riot wants you to think, but I was perm-banned for this

i get ganked top while mid feeds..

makes sense
no wonder this mid/jg so bad

Your behavior means you are no longer welcome in the League of Legends community.

Zero hate speech or anything mildly threatening and this was a perm ban. They dont review anything by person.

You weren't punished for hate speech. You were punished for being 'that guy' consistently.

Gotodead5 votes

oh you mean that guy with a 60% winrate to get to diamond 3 that tried his best in every game while having to deal with people that actually afk/grief/etc and ruin games while getting upset at them once in a while? oh my god what a nuisance!

Not to mention I never got a single chat restriction, went straight to 2 week and perm for small stuff like this. Where are all the other logs if it was so consistent? I was only sent this one.

EfficientDynamo6 votes

Do you understand, at minimum, that what you wrote was toxic? Also, why should someone in Diamond be treated differently than someone in Silver?

Gotodead2 votes

"toxic" sure but not permanent ban worthy. 2 weeks ok fine.

Wasn't implying that by the way, just stating that to get 60% winrate and get to that MMR you have to put in a lot of effort and obviously arent a troll/ruining games.

Angry Monster6 votes

but you had 2 week ban and did not correct your behavior.

went straight to 2 week and perm

Guess you were consistent enough that riot wanted to send you a msg and you ignored it. You are just proof that people do not listen to the warnings (like 2 week bans). Riot has clearly stated that after the 2 week ban, the next step is perma ban.

Gotodead1 votes

I wasn't though, as you can see after I called out the rioter he never comes back and posts these "consistent" logs. Literally my only log that was sent. Saying that one time over the course of like 100 games for a perm ban is ridiculous.

You already had a 2 week ban. You don't get another one. Hence why something that was light enough to trigger a chat restriction gave you a permaban. If you really want to have a conversation about it, make your own thread.

That is not "small stuff". You are constantly harassing people for each movement they make, then extorting them with threats like "im afk" and finally you ask for reports like you even had the right to decide other people's reports (seriously, those "9x report" people are the worst, you are not entitled to my report, and I'm not gonna use it to satisfy your rage).

You got rightfully punished.

Gotodead1 votes

Not really, getting upset that I had to play with a foreign dynamic queue premade that purosely ignored top lane all game while losing 2v1s mid and then perm banning me over it is not a "rightful punishment"

and as I said thats 1 game in a lot, I played 100 ranked games this season and got punished twice so thats a 2% rate of being toxic. not very high.

Any percentage is high enough.

is it too much to ask for something like: an option to disable chat, or instead of pressing enter to open chat i can switch it to some key combination harder to perform or to mute myself

for now i'll lower chat scale to minimum, if i somehow still try to type on the in-game chat i'll remove enter key from my keyboard, i dont wanna become 'that guy' or get a perma ban because i tilted in a game after many loses

i know its not riot problem, its ours only, but a little help to stop us from getting ourselves banned because we under-performed and are starting to get angry and frustrated is always welcome

Does the system differentiate between simply saying "fggot", and saying for example "all fggots should an hero"? What's the difference you may ask? Let me explain what I'm trying to say. IMO there's a big difference between calling someone a "fggot" for example for running from a fight or something, and using "fggot" as in "I hate gay people". IMO the system should differentiate between the two. Both can lead to a chat restriction, but only the second one should result in an instant perma ban.

If you're using a gay slur to talk about someone running scared then you're saying "Running away scared is something a gay person would do". Saying "you act like a gay person and that's a bad thing!" isn't much better than "you are a gay person and that's a bad thing!".

Using minority slurs in contexts like that is something that developed from hate. Every time you use the word "fggot" as an insult, you're using a homophobic slur. You don't need to be saying "You are a fggot" for it to be homophobic.

What...? I see people calling others the N-Word or using homophobic slurs all the time. I always report it and I know for a fact these people never got banned. I even sent in a screenshot of a guy repeatedly calling me the N-Word once. Last I checked he is still playing on the same account. So much for zero tolerance........

Abyssphere1 votes

{quoted}

Just asking out of curiosity, do you also think calling someone a b*tch is always slut shaming/misogyny?

Not really. The words are functionally very different as insults. "Bitch" is an insult exclusively targeted at women but it's used for specific women (i.e. ones you find unpleasant), whereas "%%%got" is used for... any gay person, regardless of any other traits they have. To clarify, if you're calling someone a "bitch" you're saying that they're a woman and that they're an unpleasant person for some other reason (i.e. maybe they're very aggressive or rude). When you call someone a "%%%got" you're saying that they're unpleasant simply because they're gay, or in the "stop being a %%%got and running away!" sense, that they're unpleasant because they're similar to a gay person.

To be a "%%%got", you only have to be gay. To be a "bitch", you (usually) need to have actual negative characteristics outside of your gender. Do you see the difference?

Myrmiron1 votes

I see what you're saying but for me "btch" and "fggot" both don't imply "annoying woman" and "gay person" but the traits associated with the 2 words. I don't care about a words origin when using it. Both the words embody a unique niche of traits, and I use them for that niche, not to express my hatred for gay people or annoying women. To be fair though similar to how straight people can be fggots, gay people can also be fggots. But I guess I wouldn't call someone gay I don't personally know that so I guess you can call me a hypocrite to some extend.

uhhh, I agree even spread is fine Cracker - ban em Misogynist isn't hate speech and neither is Misandrist, neither side should be banned. Calling someone a racist isn't hate speech, and thats the equivalent

Dominick Destine2 votes

{quoted}

uhhh, I agree even spread is fine

That is what justice means; The rules apply evenly to all and those that violate the rules will get what corresponds to them (I.e. perma ban).

Cracker - ban em

That is correct. The "C" word should be insta ban just as the "N" word is considered "zero tolerance" vocabulary.

Misogynist isn't hate speech and neither is Misandrist, neither side should be banned.

It is an insult fueled by hatred and thus, it is hate speech.

If the rules are being applied evenly, such insults must be punished with an even hand, not cherry picking against one side and looking-the-other-way for another.

Calling someone a racist isn't hate speech

Except racist is a general term whereas "Misogynist" is specifically levied against men nearly by definition. It's not the equivalent.

Point being; If you use slurs against a large swath of people because of hatred (aka hate speech) all forms of hate speech should apply. The rules must be exercised fairly against all violations of the summoner code.

No, it isn't. It can easily be a statement of fact, as much as someone being racist can be a statement of fact.

If the rules are being applied evenly, such insults must be punished with an even hand, not cherry picking against one side and looking-the-other-way for another.

Except racist is a general term whereas "Misogynist" is specifically levied against men nearly by definition. It's not the equivalent.

Its all general, discrimination on sex is more general than race. No misogynist isnt male exclusive, when used hatefully it applies to anyone who disagrees with the idiot using it male or female. It is the same as calling someone racist, which isn't hate speech.

Point being; If you use slurs against a large swath of people because of hatred (aka hate speech) all forms of hate speech should apply. The rules must be exercised fairly against all violations of the summoner code.

Basically

Dominick Destine1 votes

No, it isn't.

Yes it is. It's really not that complicated; Slurs and insults against a large swath of people fueled by hatred = Hate speech

It can easily be a statement of fact

Oh okay, because that argument is totally valid when defending hate speech. "I can call this person a [Bundle of sticks] because it's a statement of fact!" "Oh okay then your argument is perfect and thus when you called him that, it was not hate speech and you will not be banned" /boggle Do you see how terrible your argument is...?

And by the way, I am against censorship given that I strongly lean towards libertarianism (Thus against feminism/leftism) but I understand Riot has specific policies limiting what one can say, that's fine, that is their system and I agree with it when I enter the game. I support Riot and their system 100% of the way at all times because I am not in charge, I don't make the rules, Riot makes the rules .

No misogynist isnt male exclusive

I don't remember saying otherwise, but sure, keep pretending like I did. If attacking a strawman argument helps your case I will not stop you.

All I am saying is; Hatred towards **ANY **group should be punished, not just towards certain groups. The rules must apply evenly to everyone.

Except racist is a general term whereas "Misogynist" is specifically levied against men nearly by definition. It's not the equivalent.

misogynist noun

  1. a person who dislikes, despises, or is strongly prejudiced against women.

racist noun

  1. a person who believes that a particular race is superior to another.

Now one of those is the belief that a gender is inferior. The other is the belief that a race is inferior.

Nothing about the word misogynist is explicitly applied towards men. The only type of person misogynist applies to is, well.. someone who believes one gender (women in this case. Misandry is the other version) is inferior to the other.

Nothing about the word racist is explicitly applied towards one race. The only type of person racist applies to is, well... someone who believes one race is superior to the others.

Now, these are the textbook definitions of the words. There's no debate about who they apply to. If you want to see the difference, lets glance at the history of the word f!@#$%.

It originally meant a bundle of sticks, typically used to light a pyre when burning witches back in ye olde days. Back then, homosexuals where seen as soo inferior that they didnt even deserve their own pyre. They were simply tossed in with the kindling, or f!@#$%s, as it was called back then. Which is, oddly enough, where we get the term flaming f!@#$%.

So, one word is used to describe a person who is so worthless that they should be burned with kindling, while the other two words are used to describe someone who has a superiority complex and believes themselves better than (insert race, gender, etc).

So, to sum it all up for you. Misogynist is some one who engages in hate speech/actions towards women, misandrist is someone who engages in hate speech/actions towards men, and homophobe is someone who engages in hate speech/actions towards lgbtq+ people.

None of these words are bannable, because they aren't inherently linked to hateful actions or words. They are words used to describe someone who hates someone.

F!@#$%, on the other hand, is used to describe someone so base, so lesser than you, that they deserve nothing more than to be added to the kindling pile and burned.

Now, make sense?

Dominick Destine1 votes

Now one of those is the belief that a gender is inferior. The other is the belief that a race is inferior.

Yes, sex and race and not the same.

Congratulations on figuring that one out and launching into a fairly long strawman argument.

Nothing about the word misogynist is explicitly applied towards men.

Again, I don't remember making such a statement but continue with your strawman.

None of these words are bannable

And that's entirely the point, they should be bannable , as much as the "N" word or the "C" word. The rest of your post was strawman and fluff nonsense.

But let me present my argument again since you seem to have been unable to understand in previous instances; The word "Misogyny" is an slur used almost exclusively against men fueled by actual hatred (Misandry, often by feminists), it should be punished just as severely as other slurs against large swaths of people (Ex: The "N" word or [Bundle of sticks] ).

Your argument, which is pure garbage, is that "Misogyny" can be used on women. By your incredibly [Insert bad word here] logic ; The "N" isn't hatred because sometimes its used on non-black people. That is not an excuse nor is it a defense.

It's really not that complicated. All slurs against large swaths of people fueled by hatred = Hate speech, all hate speech should be punished equally because, and stay with me here, the rules should apply equally to all. Whether it's a homosexual man saying "Catholicism is for idiots" , a feminist saying "Kill all men" , a black man saying "You are a [Bundle of sticks]", or even people like me (Hispanic men) that say , I don't know "All people who use strawman arguments are [Insert forbidden word here]".... point being everyone is subject to the rule of law, no one is above the law.

Once again; The rules should apply evenly to everyone. No exceptions.

im not saying they are innocent. but im referring more to the borderline players who are being screwed over by the new strike system as opposed to the habitual trolls or extreme flamers. in addition. many of these borderline players know they ARE breaking a rule but not which one. as the summoners code is very vague and the definition of "toxic" isnt clearly defined. which is why these threads tend to show up. and zero tolerance policies have shown time and time again that they dont work. as much as you may want them to. also why havent we been given the option to disable chat for ourselves? for many of us its not a question of whether we want to stop. but rather CANT stop

From Riot Tantram:

It really breaks down into two categories.

1.) Helping players reform 2.) Shielding others from the behavior, at a cost.

We used to issue chat restrictions that essentially scaled indefinitely.

We were able to determine that after a certain point the penalty no longer helped with reform. The 10-game and 25-game counts for chat restrictions are based on data that they were both light enough, and felt strict enough to encourage people to understand their behavior is unacceptable in game and change it.

We also saw that the players in this 'large restriction' category defaulted to gameplay altering means of harassing their team. It caused an increase in feeding and trolling.

The sample size of this population and time frame is huge. Essentially the time spanning from the introduction of chat restrictions to the introduction of IFS.

So my question for you is, would you rather have more feeders and less negative chat?

If someone isn't gonna interact with others in a mature and respectful manner despite getting multiple chances to do so then why shouldn't they be removed from the community?
