What is the boards punishment escalation system, and how long does it take to decay?

Greetings oh mighty moderators,

Recently I received my first ban (24 hour ban about 3 days ago) for spamming in GD. It was a perfectly fair ban, I am not here to argue that. But it got me curious about two things:

First: What is the punishment escalation on the boards? I know in game it is something like chat restriction > 1 day ban > 14 day ban > permaban.

Second: How long does it take for it to decay? I.e, how long before you go down a tier for the next punishment?

Thank you,

It's not like in-game punishments. Their decisions are based on what they see when they look at your punishment history and the case at hand. They could give you two 3 day bans back to back for separate issues, or if it's the same thing they might do a 7 day ban, or if it's a minor different issue it could just be 24 hours even if you just came off 7 day ban; it's up to their judgement.

TheCurator has said something along these lines before but I'll have to dig through his profile a few minutes.

Edit: TheCurator has clarified on possible punishments.

Well I've been 14 dayed, 24 houred, had posts removed, given warnings, all of it. The only thing I can say is there isn't much consistency. It feels like it's probably based on the mood of the mod who decided to hammer you.

On the Boards there are four possible punishments:

  • Warning
  • 1 Day Suspension
  • 7 Day Suspension
  • Permanent Suspension

The type of removal determines where we start with the punishment. Most first removals start with a warning. However, if your post was a more offensive removal you could start at a 7 Day suspension.

If you've received a 1 Day suspension then you've either continued an activity that you've been warned for in the past, posted something that is normally a warning but continued to post it repeatedly with no sign of stopping (usually spamming something), or posted something that normally would be a 7 Day but it's your very first offense and was borderline.

As with in-game punishments, Boards punishments focus on recency but can still take into account your entire removal history as that tells us a lot about overall intent in regards to the Universal Rules. If someone had a bunch of removals but then had none for a long time and then had a single removal, we wouldn't take into account the past removals due to them showing an intention to reform.

These are general guidelines we follow overall, but there are so many potential edge cases in a community this large that the possible exceptions can be many. That's why you're allowed to come here and ask about removals. The grand majority of posts are removed and people understand why. It's a small minority that ask for clarification or take issue with the removal.

Months unless you play league 24/7 2 week ban for feeding one game hard after being flat out griefed/trolled months ago still restricted from rewards....

Although haven't seen as many hard trolls lately so that is a positive <3

But honestly IDC about the rewards anyways its garbage nice to have sure id rather have a non toxic league though, and peeps with more brains in games lol, perhaps this is a good start to something Riot should have done years ago.
