Banned 14 days for ridiculous reason

ZephyrSMist··1 votes·1,060 views

So I was playing in a losing team, and then most of us agreed that we would surrender. When we called surrender, a player declined and say "nope". So my response was saying, "Lol fa**ot" jokingly without any harm in mind. Then boom, right off the bat 14 days ban, no warnings, no 10 games chat ban. Well, you said 1 word that the system sees as offensive, for the very first time ? Here's your two weeks ban, enjoy ! Thx League of Legends.

Chat log: Game 1 ZephyrSMist: lol ZephyrSMist: %%%got ZephyrSMist: %%% ZephyrSMist: s

*I typed "%%%" agn because I was curious as I typed the word "%%%got" and only got four ***, I mean it's supposed to be six, so I made It clear that I am not saying Fu word.

yeap.

It's part of Riot's zero tolerance policies, and they treat it pretty seriously.

Homophia / hate speech is not a joke. Hope you learn from this.

Well I mean I should've gotten a warning, and 10 days chat ban instead of instant two weeks

While I understand your concerns understand that there is zero context where this kind of language is acceptable in this day and age, hence why it has a zero tolerance policy here. If you want to joke around like this then it should be done in a full pre-made group of friends who you know won't report you for it. Otherwise use this as a lesson to be respectful and mindful of how you act when around strangers, especially if your idea of a joke involves hate speech and racist comments. Basically just watch what you say before what you say watches you.

EDIT: From The Summoner's Code:

Remember, taking a jab at your friend in the middle of the game is a lot different than making a glib remark at a complete stranger. Someone who is unfamiliar with what you consider playful may take your comment as an attack and react unfavorably. If two players on a team start fighting, good communication and teamwork become nearly impossible. Once communication breaks down, the likelihood of victory is drastically diminished. It isn't uncommon for simple, good natured teasing to spiral out of control into a loss, so do yourself a favor and don't run the risk of sabotaging your own success.

EDIT: From The Summoner's Code:

Punishments generally follow a basic escalation path: First Offense: 10 Game Chat Restriction Second Offense: 25 Game Chat Restriction Third Offense: Two Week Suspension Fourth Offense: Permanent Suspension However, it is possible to skip to a Two Week or Permanent suspension based on the severity of the behavior in the game. Excessive negative behavior can result in a Two-Week or Permanent suspension at any time without having a chat restriction on the account.

So this one word counts as "Excessive" negative behavior ? How do you know that one word is excessively negative ? There is no specification, and therefore it is absurd.

Hate speech, racist comments, death threats/wishes and the like always result in an escalated punishment. The specific word you used is a derogatory and offensive term and is commonly used as such, hence the zero-tolerance policy on it. Riot will never release a full list of words and phrases on what isn't allowed as some people will use that to skirt the line between punishable and not punishable.

Well... then they should say it that way "Hate speech, racist comments, death threats/wishes and the like always result in an escalated punishment." This is unfair, because some people that say F word should also be considered as delivering hate speech, yet they still got the First Offense step.

The 14-day ban is the first offense step for players who get punished for things I outlined above in addition to poor gameplay behavior (i.e. intentionally feeding, intentionally trolling, etc.) because it's considered more severe then your traditional poor chat behavior. You shouldn't need a warning that these kinds of things are unacceptable, hence the harsher stance on them.

All non-permanent punishments are considered warnings that you will lose your account if you continue. The 14 day ban is their final warning that they are not going to put up with your actions, and is the first warning given if you break their zero tolerance policy.

People think of chat restrictions and the 14 day ban as punishments, and think there should be warnings, but to Riot the only punishment is permanently losing your account, and everything else is a harsh warning.

Since you think they have zero tolerance policy, then we should just remove the First and Second offense step, and just apply the Third to everyone without any excuses. Then I would gladly accept this punishment, because then it will be fair.

I often share this flow chart that describes it in a more visual manner.

https://i.imgur.com/ACZhFYu.png

They call it zero tolerance, but they do give you a second chance by having the first punishment be the 14 day warning. The first two tiers are there for people who are just arguing excessively or have a bad attitude, where as the 14 day warning is for people who either ignored the previous warnings or did something on Riot's zero tolerance list.

Your punishment is by all accounts fair. You agreed to Riot's behavioral guidelines, and if you didn't read them before agreeing that is your own fault. "Fair" means everyone is covered equally, not that it feels good to you, and Riot is most certainly fair in their punishments.

That IS your warning.

14-day ban is the warning for zero tolerance policies.

Be glad it wasn't a direct permaban.

rework trundle2 votes

It's not ridiculous because you used THE trigger words to get an instant 14 days ban.

You do realize riot is in California right? SJW center of the world? you lucky it wasn't a permaban and a sexual harassment charge

Nope, didn't know that. That word is only seen as offensive if someone sees it as inappropriate and insulting word, thus not allowing a community to use the word in a positive way. It only exists in a place where discrimination still exists.

Then I'm not really seeing the problem in the ban.

You called someone a %%%got, then %%%, both unacceptable slurs, got reported, then punished.

It's something gladly acceptable to have a punishment of something relevantly lighter for the first time. This is like getting shot 3 times in the chest as a "warning shot".

Chermorg6 votes

You shouldn't need a warning shot to know hate speech is unacceptable.

I've been using it all the time and everyone was fine with it....

Someone reported you, so someone wasn't fine with it in that game.

Riot also wasn't fine with it.

So everyone isn't fine with it. You can't apply the behavior that you and your friends find acceptable to every social interaction.

Okay, I get your idea, someone might get offended by it. However, it should count as "first offense" as stated in the rules, and not instant two weeks. I didn't show any stated "excessive negative behavior", unless if you see that one word as excessively negative behavior.

And good to know that not everyone in League of Legends accepts an LGBT community behavior.

And I really doubt that the LGBT community as a whole like being called an insulting slur, but that's neither here nor there.

As a whole, maybe not. But it's an acceptable word in that community.

I know plenty of gay guys, none are ok with that word. I also was a part of a LGBT chapter and, no, they also were not ok with that word.

sleepysithlord1 votes

Well, thats not necessarily true. I report everyone all the time despite never getting actually offended. I just do it cause there is no penalty for reporting someone and figure that the more other people get in trouble the less trouble I can get in

AeroWaffle3 votes

Thankfully reports against people who do nothing wrong are ignored and players that are horrible people at their core are a minority.

If you're going to use that analogy, wouldn't death be the equivalent of the death of your account?

If so, perma-ban would be the shot in the chest, this is the last warning shot that doesn't kill your account.

Alright great, so instead of being given a warning first, I would instantly got the warning shot, gotcha.

You agreed to the terms and conditions and the summoner code. That should be warning enough. It literally says to not pull shit like this. Further, there is no way for us or the system to know who or what you are and if you use the word as hatespeech, or as a reapproprated nickname.

ModPeriscope1 votes

I don't feel that's an accurate analogy.

To punish it with a chat restriction would place hate speech on the same severity as things like "this jungler sucks". The slur is worse than your every day toxicity

Well that's solely your opinion on how you see it as "toxic".

ModPeriscope1 votes

It's a homophobic slur. There's no place for it. And it seems like it was used as an insult

The Iceborn1 votes

i had a 10 game chat ban for saying the F word and that was justified since i was toxic for a few games... but honestly thats unfair to ban for saying fa..ot -.- especially if its a joke but dont forget riot reviews all your chat log history! maybe u were toxic for a few games before ...

Zombie Gerbil1 votes

Nothing you said here can be taken as a joke. As for the ban, you deserved it. Words have consequences.

Xidphel1 votes

Yup. It's ridiculous you used those words since riot has zero tolerance for this shit.

KlydeFrog1 votes

lol yep its a automatic system that will ban you with certain words and or he reported u and bame. thats your fault

so I made It clear that I am not saying Fu word.

You can say "fuck", as long as you aren't using it to harass someone. I have often said it when I royally fuck up a skill shot or ult.
