@Riot. Please Look Into Making Smurf Accounts Against ToS

I do not know if they currently are, but I would heavily recommend and plead for the creation of "smurf" accounts to be against the ToS. In the years I've been playing this game, I've seen a large number of "smurf" account, as well as had a few of my own every so often. In my experience the only reason people play smurf accounts, is to play with people of a lower skill level. Whether their intentions are malicious or benevolent, it creates a nearly unplayable environment for those who are actually at that lower skill level.

A few examples from real games:

  • An entire team does their best and gets completely crushed by a single player who should clearly not be in their MMR range. -Granted sometimes a snowballing champion gets ahead in items or creep farm and someone of the same skill could realistically do that in a game at any rank.

  • A player who is on a "smurf" account blames their poor play entirely on the fact that they are "not trying" or "just playing around" -In normal games it is still frustrating, but even more-so in a Ranked game. Players are putting in their all. Having a member of your team figuratively spit on your efforts because of your rank, and then either not try or literally leave the game, is soul crushing.

  • A Smurf player intentionally dies to the enemy team, or tries ridiculous untested builds for either amusement or "Because its a smurf account" -These players often don't care at all about being reported and often just blatantly state they are on a smurf account, so they can do whatever they want. So there are literally no repercussions for their actions.

I know this is a tough problem, because players with good intentions players can play from the same connection or even the same computer as malicious players. There has to be some way of preventing this sort of behavior.

At the very least, I request that if an account is claimed to be a smurf, they are banned from Ranked. It won't affect their main account, but it will at least prevent them from ruining further games on that account. Its as easy as adding an option into the report list, I'd recommend between Verbal Abuse and Intentional Feeding, that can be checked if they claim such as an excuse. Of course the tribunal users will still need to check the chat logs to confirm and make the final decision.

I am sorry if this sort of this is already being addressed else-where, but the posts I had found on the subject were majority either archived or written purely from a standpoint of anger.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, have a great day.

Sincerely, Alistar Gotlyfe

Honestly, smurfs cause a lot more harm than good. I really wish Riot would take a harder stance against them.

i think the best way to combat smurfing. would be to use a similar system to how they detect account sharing. analyze things like CPM, what champs a person plays. how they play/what they build how often they ward ect. if they can detect someone on your account that isnt you. they can detect if you're on more than one account

The worst is account leveling. You have to choose. Leveling VS AI with tons of bots (that actually are leveling accounts for sale) or leveling account with tons of smurfs, that dont allow to have fun from game.

I agree that there should be some form of account linking that allows smurfs to start off at level 30 and then throws the normal MMR from their main onto the smurf. That would solve a lot of the problems with newer players getting pitted against smurf accounts and having much less fun as a result.

However, getting rid of smurfs would introduce a load of new problems. I'll admit some people smurf because they just want to boost their ego playing against less skilled players, but there are a number of valid reasons smurfs exist. Your friends list is limited to 200 players which means if you're highly popular and want to be linked to more friends to play with, you're going to need a smurf Once you hit diamond or something, ranked queues take a ridiculously long amount of time. A lot of higher level players make smurfs so they can get back into competitive play without having to wait a game's length before getting into an actual game. Sometimes, more well known players want to be able to play incognito which requires either changing their summoner name every single time they don't want attention, or making a smurf account. Streamers often make smurfs for playing with their subscribers as it essentially gives them a seperate subscriber friends list and a main friends list on their main account. With the new ranked system, it's no longer possible to play ranked with friends unless you're in a tier of each other or until Riot finally brings back ranked teams 5v5 (not sure how long that will take) so you have to make a smurf to play competitively with them.

TLDR, smurfs should be able to play ranked.

The catalyst for me posting this was a "Plat 4 Top" smurf who was our adc. He continuously claimed he was a "Plat 4 Top", and I continously responded, not in this game, you're our ADC.

He ended up throwing the game at the end while typing all of our faults into /all chat.

Smurfs have a lot of ups and downs mixed with them and honestly there is no perfect solution

@Riot relax, we know its a hard issue and you're my bae for trying to fix it

As far as stance on this there is a lot of mix and match and I feel ranked play should at a minimum be an accelerated versions of ranked starting them above silver or gold based on their respective ranks on their main accounts. Smurfing below even one whole tier can hurt or help lots of people and can overall make the game less fun for people actually in those tiers, I feel that starting them above silver or gold will allow them to enjoy the adventure of climbing and the core skills they're learning in that climb while allowing people who suck (I.E. Me) to still play and learn with people in my level.

THIS DOES NOT FULLY RESOLVE THE ISSUE The reason I say that this doesn't fully resolve the issue is because it works off of the honesty of our community, and while I like to think the best of our community and that they never would deceive us like Leblanc and are less toxic than Teemo 's Toxic Shot thats just not the case for us. To resolve this the opportunity does appear to include something maybe not in ToS but rather added to the summoners code. Something when making an account if you have a "Main" account it MUST be listed in account creation, thus it can pull information off the main account and associate the correct ranking to the new one. With some punishment in accordance for breaking those rules.** I feel that this fits in the summoner's code nicely because the summoner's code is the code that we as summons agree to abide on while on the rift and within our community**

I know that Riot is actively looking at options to resolve smurfing issues as discussed in ask riots and other mediums. Riot wouldn't be discussing it if it wasn't a problem for us players.

Things I think Riot needs to consider are as follows: (Mind you I disregarded the fact and reality that Riot even needs to consider if its worth the cost to fix this, time is money, and this project is without a doubt time related)

  1. The impact on the community -What will happen to people who smurf -What will happen to our normal playerbase

  2. The impact on the game -Does this make the game better or worse? -Is it going to negitively impact a majority, or anyone for that matter -Where is league going as a community and a competitive e-sport

  3. The impact on competitive play -Does this effective competitive play on a marginal level -Will this make competitive better or worse? -How will this mold competitive play

After typing that, my right arm is a lot stronger than my left arm. Tryndamere

I will agree that something does need to be done about it. But putting it in the ToS seems to be pushing it a little bit too hard. I feel like if anything they should have smurf accounts and Main accounts all linked with each other. That way (especially for toxic people) when people are breaking the rules and they dont care because they are on a smurf account they can actually get punish in the process.

Granted im not sure how something like that can happen when there are possibly hundreds/thousands of smurf accounts that would need to get regulated. If anything they really should have thought about it sooner and just have it to where people only have one account.

What about people who make accounts to play normals, vs other REAL people, with friends who have just started out? I know a few people who've made another account or two so they could play with friends WHO JUST JOINED and help them learn the game more by playing actual normals without making their, say, level 10 friend play with level 30 players.

Should they get in trouble for helping out a friend?

Icy Hot Shoto6/26/2016, 10:06:29 PM1 votes

If you're helping a friend learn the game in a smurf, and you're treating those low level normals as challenger tier ranked games, then that's YOUR(or the persons) fault, not their friends fault. If you're playing normals on a low level smurf to help a friend then treating it like ranked, rather then messing around a little and treating it like a normal game it is, then THAT person deserves to not have a smurf or not allowed to play ranked.

Both my friends had played champs they've NEVER played as they helped their friends level and get better at both playing the game and understanding it. They even used both the in game chat box and Skype to help their friends. Neither of them treated the normals as ranked games, only as games to help a friend get better.

There's a difference between actually teaching and just sitting there taking kills and pushing lane without even communicating with your friend.
