How it feels to be flamed

Hello friends and foes,

There are a lot of people on the Rift that make me tilt. Junglers that gank with 30% HP, ADC's that flash into the enemy tower to grab one kill and then blame you for not following them into death, top laners who teleport into four enemies at dragon while your team isn't even close.. and a lot more. You all know that special person who .. just makes a very bad play, or gets caught in the unwarded enemy jungle.

But here is the thing: These people are humans. Behind that 0/5/0 Yasuo is a real person, with real feelings - and face it, there a things you can write that hurt like hell.

"please drink bleach you fucking low life and go die alone on the streets", "hope your mother gets raped and killed you little bitch", "hahaha your whole family should die from cancer you fucking noob"

Why? Even when I'm super angry while I play League, wich happens a lot (I have a very bad temper), I just punch my desk or growl, scream - something to get me off so I can play on a second later. I would never think about writing something so cruel to someone else. I'm not going to lie here, I flamed some players too.. Who didn't? But these thing were never cruel or nasty to the person behind that troll LeBlanc support.

What bothers me the most is that some people don't even think about what they are writing. You think it's funny when someone loses family to cancer, just to read in a game that the rest of his family should die too? No, Sir. That's not funny - that's bullshit.

So before you start typing your insult, think about the other person and how you would feel if someone wrote stuff like that to you.

I'm really not trying to be insensitive or one of those "back in my day we hiked up hill both ways" people, but I literally cannot comprehend how someone in League saying "I hope your mom gets cancer" can get taken so seriously/be THAT offensive to someone. I understand that it's against the rules here and I'll report them for it, but only because I want to get people banned, not because I just HAVE to get rid of negative chat.

And this is coming from someone who's mom did actually get cancer. That was actually hard to go through.. Getting told toxic stuff over the internet by a stranger? Laughable.

I agree that insults needn't be hurled within any stages of any game. It's a_game_, it implies you should have fun and shouldn't be worried about getting insulted, because all five players on the team rolled their dice when they queued up with four other random dumbasses like themselves. Toxic players like the ones you describe are primarily what is wrong with LoL right now. It wasn't like this three years ago, at least, not quite as bad. Because people do make account just to troll in games, RIOT needs to implement a faster response to accounts with this type of behavior.

use the mute button? if a fat retard in real life is saying things to you what do you do? you laugh your ass off and walk away because its a joke dont know why people cant do that on the internet.

I personally wouldnt give a shit because the person is probably mentally ill and has a fat shitty life anyways LOL

People on the internet say these things because they are tilted, toxic, salty, or just trolls. Most of us would see these threats as a joke. I know some people take these threats literally and that's ok. But please understand that every toxic threat is not to be taken literally.

Can't answer all at once:

I know that you can simply mute someone, or you shouldn't be bothered by it at all. But to be honest.. Sometimes I am, mostly when someone else gets flamed. Myself? Jeez. I don't care. It makes me more sad when someone else get treated like that because I know I can deal with stuff like this... But other players.. I don't know.

There are 10's of these posts a day just on the na forums. Not too long ago I took some time to try to really analyze why people act the way they do in league. I settled on a few things.

  1. People act this way because they can get away with it as long as they do not act this way for a high percentage of games over the course of an extended period of time. Meaning Riot in their FAQ lists that they dont ban you because of a bad day or even bad week. This leaves a lot of room to allow people to be terrible to one another while having 0 repercussions and are protected my anonymity that the internet provides coupled with the fact there is an extremely low chance they will ever play with you again. Hence again no repercussions.

  2. Next you have to look at why people feel the need to lash out to begin with. This is much more than simply "because they can" or "because they are trying to project their terrible lives onto others". All might be true, but the real answer comes from how Riot currently built league. I like to use this line. "It takes 1 player to lose, but it takes a team to win". Meaning it just takes 1 person on your team to do poorly in the lane phase, for everyone on your entire team to lose and be punished. At the same time even if someone gets far ahead, they still can't 1v5 hence the team to win part. See Riot's system is pretty crappy this way. It punishes everyone equally for a loss despite your individual performance, yet it rewards everyone equally as well, even though you could of done terribly.

What all this means is when you have a system that only issues out rewards in an all or nothing, win or loss, system. You immediately create an environment were yes people will be terrible to one another because they know that they will ultimately be punished because of 1 person(s). You immediately create an unfriendly environment.

If you are in normal mode winning or losing does not mean anything. The teams are never balanced to begin with. You just play. If you play ranked you are there because you want to rank up and gain LP. Like i said before when whether you are punished or rewarded depends on 4 other people completely. It is not hard to understand why we have the player base we have today.

I like to compare this to like CoD online multiplayer. Sure you ultimately have winners and losers, but the game is usually based on your individual KDA. If you have 30 kills and 2 deaths at the end of the match and your team lost, you likely really dont care because you still get a huge amount of xp and your KDA was awesome. Now the LoL system in CoD would look like this. You only gain xp if you win, and you actually lose XP if your team loses. Throw that model on CoD and the community instantly becomes just as bad as the league community.

Think about it. Even if your team plays well. You play the game Riot wants you to play (objectives) and you get 2 barons, a dragon and 6 towers. You tried, you played, but your team ultimately lost for whatever reason. You get punished. Simple as that.

Like everything we have today. Riot is completely responsible for how we got here.

The reason why things will never change? They are not smart enough to create solutions that will not reduce their potential revenue.

Welcome to League of Hateful Racists!

I'm a bit new to the game, but I have played several hundred games in all modes for the past several months and I can definitely say that LoL is the worst game in history when it comes to hateful and toxic people. Almost every game I have played there has been at least one, if not more, people screaming racist, derogatory, and toxic stuff constantly before, during, and after games. They have no filter, don't have a life, and they know that people can report them all day long and nothing will happen to them. The biggest problem with this is that if racist toxic players don't get banned, good respectful players quit the game cause of the toxic players and thus creating a community of mostly racist toxic players in LoL. This also sets up matches where if your team has toxic hateful players, you are guaranteed to lose every time, the game becomes less fun and becomes all about who is more toxic and hateful. I've played a lot of games where people stop playing so they can have race wars.

With that in mind, best suggestion for everyone who doesn't want to deal with these racist toxic hate speech players is to either mute them or play a different game cause Riot isn't doing enough to deal with these players and they probably won't ever.

"please drink bleach you fucking low life and go die alone on the streets", "hope your mother gets raped and killed you little bitch", "hahaha your whole family should die from cancer you fucking noob"

See now this is being toxic. How come I get banned 3 times for telling people to quit feeding.

So before you start typing your insult, think about the other person and how you would feel if someone wrote stuff like that to you.

It probably would hurt them. But they don't care. Their in the moment justification overrides empathy. Or they are being empathetic. Empathy is not the ability to feel what others are feeling; it is the ability to project oneself onto another person. So if they don't give a fuck that you told them that their mother should die of cancer, then why would they think you care?

Or, and here's a radical notion, they're trying to hurt you. Because that's what an insult is designed to do. 'Before you type your thing that's supposed to make me feel bad, think about the feelings of the other person!' Do you realize how backwards that logic is?

I don't particularly care what others say to me on the internet because what they say are words that I can choose to ignore. This coming from the guy whose mother was diagnosed with cancer 6 days after his 13th birthday, whose grandfather died from sepsis in the same house, and who can't even enjoy some of his favorite foods anymore because of surgery.

You learn to get over it with time.

The reason people go on tilt and rage at their feeder teammates is because ELO is and has been broken since inception. The massive skill differences between players in all ELO levels is too wide. So when some noob gets pubstomped by someone who is supposedly the same ELO, it ruins the game for the other 9. I dont enjoy games where the enemy team has a feeder who is massively unskilled. I report and pray, they have no business in ranked.
