Why is it so hard to find nice players?

Duross·3/24/2016, 12:18:10 AM·7 votes·1,838 views

Its been a while since I last played this game, and I remember why now. I recently got myself a nice new laptop and was excited to play some games on it like league. I download and patch the game and enter a game in the rift. I swear no more then 5 minutes has passed and all I can read in chat is hatful comments and my entire team criticizing me for not playing the right way. This is a normal 5v5 mind you, not some draft into diamond. I have never in my life been so disgusted to be part of a community, so much that I don't think I ever want to play this game again and that's saying a lot because I've played league since beta and have invested a lot of time and money into my account. I don't ever post my opinions openly but after this particular match I cant help but make an attempt to reach out to someone for advise and or support. I feel bad and almost depressed someone who I would think is just playing the game to enjoy themselves as I am could make such a small action in game like a miss click and then beat another player down so hard for it. If this is going to continue I see no reason to endure stress and drama for some thirty minutes just to have the same thing happen the next game. Please Riot, just tell me some reason I should continue to be bombarded and harassed all for the sake of a victory.

Most replies are going be a little anecdote about their own terrible experiences and maybe offer you suggestions on how to avoid it. Or maybe they'll just jump into the "everyone is horrible you should stop playing" pool.

Heck, I'll even add my own: in the last year, I've only seen/reported maybe around 10-20 toxic people max.

Notice how my anecdote is different from everyone else's? Maybe I'm super lucky. Or maybe it's actually because negative bias in effect. Do I remember those people I reported? Sure do. Were they horrible people? Did they make me lose faith in humanity? Yup. Do I remember the 1000s of others that were "nice" or at the very least not-toxic? Nope.

The real reason it's hard to find nice people is two-fold.

  1. You're expecting nice people to present themselves to you; you're not actually looking for them. Let's face it, most of the nice people are just going to stay silent or offer short, sweet notices: ward here, enemy missing, let's dragon, etc. They aren't going to get into long, civil philosophical discussions or chat about why they're such fun people to hang out and talk with because they're actually playing the game. These people are the norm. They are forgettable.
  2. You only remember the bad ones. The toxic people get you all riled up. They cling to your mind like leeches and will suck out any good or neutral experience you had in a game, or likely even multiple games. You also (presumably) had to take extra action to deal with them, such as reporting or yelling back at them (highly not recommended), which further solidifies the experience in your mind.

Combining these two means that there are a lot of nice people you simply ignored, while making yourself believe that only toxic people remain in the community.

because nice players are at top of the divisions, have teamed up with other nice players, have quit after suffering too much from mean players, or have turned into mean players themselves.

Opinion wise, because you're playing in NA. You're not going to find nice players in NA for a lot of reasons, one of which being English is such an easy language to type out ppl can finish a sentence in a blink of an eye, whereas something like Chinese has way, way more swearings yet the chat's more clean because it takes so much work to type ppl simply don't bother when they play a fast-paced game.

Because this game makes player mean. Their allies never do what they want and one mistake can ruin the entire game for the entire team. It just feels like the game is trying to make itself not fun for people. It's too easy to get upset by this kind of thing.

There are haters in every game. Keep you chin up, good guys are all around.

It's society these days. Me, I never cuss or put people down, but my ranked friends have resorted to calling me "trash" for being a level 20 in their regular 5v5 games. And to embarrass me further, they put it in /all, and the other team joins in. In real life, they are ok people, but in League, I don't know what happens, but they get vulgar.

I think it's because to seem better themselves, they have to put others down. (ARG SO CLICHE)

Don't worry. People like me exist.. XD ~Perry

I play tons of support roles across a whole helping of different games. Medic in Dirty Bomb / TF2, Engineer in TF2, and I'm usually the Support / Jungle in League.

All roles with intent to help others. At least, that's how I play. Other players (typically unskilled ones) tend to flame often. They're more common for a nice, calm player like myself.

I'm anywhere from a passive, turtling support, or a first engage Medic / Tank...

But people (IQ less than 15) usually don't appreciate that sort of mindset / personality.

Things that tilt me are people who flame consistently, rather than help. While this drives me away from League in particular, I still do what I can, albeit with slightly less morale.

All the cool kids are having a great time in bot matches. Legit nobody takes that seriously and with a bit of work and emote spam you can make a hundred new friends today. What are you waiting for? Play more bot matches today!

Also make sure you do the worst off meta builds while you're doing it. People like being wow'd and amazed by Full AP Fiora or Gnar in what would otherwise be a boring comp stomp.

Honestly I have outright given up on SR entirely. I've found more incredibly chill people on TT and Aram than SR. SR is the no fun is allowed boys fort. While TT is more like a gentleman's club. ARAM is just that wrestling mud pit where all the hot chicks hang out.

You have to consider how much dopamine your brain releases for various things in this game. People are heavily addicted to the feeling of making plays/getting kills/getting that win etc. It's like a mini rush of cocaine, and when people queue up right now and they're looking for that dopamine rush then DON'T get it... Well, imagine stringing along a coke or meth addict and then just telling them "I know I told you you were going to get these drugs, and you paid for them, but I changed my mind."

low level players are usually very nice, but more u lvl up, more the players get salty. I'm currently lvl 8 and most of the players are very nice. I played a few pvp games with high lvl ppl and i got a bunch of hateful comments.

It's usually that 1-30 and normal games people being washed with bad expectations and previously banned players throwing salt like its no tomorrow.

People soak it up like a sponge and are fully covered in noob grime before they even get a chance to see what actual non-toxic league players are. It takes a while to wash out the misinterpreted cognitive dissonance that is throwing the names of reportable behaviors on top of someone just playing the game.

I mean really, half the time people call someone bad its their mistake, vs a counter, or someone else. Newbies are not legitimately skilled enough to interpret if someone is playing bad or good and I honestly wish when I was new I could know that. Of course, the more extremely vocal platinum players are just as bad at non-binary assessments either so it's just a crapshoot.

Trídent3/25/2016, 3:18:59 AM1 votes

You just have to find those nice people, add them as friends, and play with them constantly :) They're easy to find, you just have to look harder

disregardable3/24/2016, 12:27:07 AM1 votes

If you type /mute all, you can mute everyone in the chat instantly, so you won't see their chat. Furthermore, you type /mute @Username (ie, /mute @Duross) or /mute @Champion (ie, /mute @Darius) to mute specific people, as well as you can press tab and click the headphone button next to anyone's name to mute/unmute them.

The word ignore also works the same way in the command, so /ignore all, /ignore @Darius, etc.

If I hadn't found the answers to my own problems a bit too late to save my account, I would've started working towards keeping people positive and showing them that League doesn't have to be frustrating if you don't let it be.

Such players ARE out there, you just need to keep an open mind and not let the small things get to you. Don't want to fall before reaching the destination, after all.
