Reports flag players for review by the system. As such, multiple reports against a player in a single game does nothing special. When a player is reported, they are checked for signs of negative behavior, and if something is found, they are pushed closer to receiving a punishment. After the system determines that a player is due for a punishment, it chooses which one based on the type of behavior they were exhibiting and how many times they've been punished for it in the past.
How it at least used to work is the Tribunal, where players who got reported would be voted to be punished by members of the community based on what you say in the report and the chat logs from the game. Not sure if that's still how it works, but that's how it used to work.
If reported by multiple people then chances are actions against that player might be taken instantly possibly based off the requirement described in the above post, if not and you're the only one who has reported the player then chances are it will take a long time for that player to be punished, including submitting a ticket.
The punishment might also depend on the severity of the committed action and repeated offense, and yes a punish message will be sent out to the player via email with the proof/action of what caused the player to be punished. Punishment range from 1 day, 7 days, 14 days, and permanent bans. This is based off my personal experience and might be different from others.
Absolutely wrong. The number of players that report you in a match has no influence on whether or not you get banned. One report is enough to trigger a review of the chat logs. However, Riot understands that every player has off days and will slip up. Players that don't normally exhibit bad behaviour will likely not receive punishments even if they were being a little toxic in the occasional game.
Players that are frequently toxic, troll, and harass other players will start to receive punishments based off of a 4-tier system. 10 day chat ban, 25 day chat ban, 14 day suspension, and finally a permanent suspension. In some cases where the player was found to be cheating, using hate speech, racism, sexism, or threats their account can be escalated to a suspension.
The system establishes a pattern of behaviour and punishes the players that are more frequently toxic in game. When players continue to display bad behaviour in game they will continue to climb the 4-tier ladder of punishments with the system giving less leeway for each punishment.

Once again based off my personal experience in the opinion that I've stated with probably/might/if, every time I've reported someone whose chat log is filled with toxicity I never instantly receive the typical "thank you for reporting blah blah action has been taken blah blah" message, but when someone whose chat is filled with toxicity is obviously reported by the entire team and I, I tend to receive the "thank you for reporting blah blah" message almost instantly and much more frequently the minute I exit out the end game lobby.
You only get a message if your report is the one that triggered the review and resulted in a ban. Its possible that random happenstance resulted in it seeming like more reports resulted in a faster ban, but that is not how the system works.
