Banned for playing Ascension differently?

So apparently, these 5 premade players got their accounts banned for intentional feeding, but these reports came from the enemy team that got tilted from playing against that for almost an hour. Basically, they played a game of Ascension (if you aren't living under a rock you would know of the gamemode riot is pumping out every week) where they would force the enemy team to surrender because they couldn't go back to base to buy items. The premade basically stopped the enemy from capturing relics with Sunfire Capes and them being too tanky to kill after a while. Watch the video for more information. I constantly play Ascension to rack up IP and play stupid shit against real people, and when i saw this strategy I wanted to play in a premade 5 and try it out. But now I'm not so sure that I should because me or my friends may get banned. The links below are ban notifications to the 5 of them.

Edit: I personally understand that these player were sort of "held hostage" but in all honesty they chose to continue trying to capture relics instead of just FF@25 or sometime there. I would assume they understood that the game would drag on and they knew that they weren't going to be able to capture relics. In my (silver 1) opinion this is almost the same as playing against someone who counter jg's you and hides in bushes forcibly tilting you hard. Or laning against Darius. And let's not forget the amount of bots that flood into these Ascension games in the first place. If these gamemodes are supposed to be short then enforce it. You could put a limit of how long a game is supposed to be like in the practice tool.

Or you could put other gamemodes back on the rotation.

I think a ban is warranted in this scenario. While I mostly think that full premades should be able to do what they want and fuck around it's only to a certain extent. If the strategy only depends on making the enemy team feel miserable and does not involve trying to actively win (by normal means, not by forcing enemy surrender), it's straight up scummy.

Riot should just fix this , not ban them , they didnt cheat or anything , come with a bannable reason that guy got perma ? He played the game , HE IS SMART , HE PLAYED WITH A STRATEGY ! And guess what , my mates from gold who open mid have honor level 3 ... nice riot .

Anomander8/8/2017, 11:52:40 PM24 votes

The problem isn't with a not killing strategy. The problem is with them not trying to even play the game but hold it hostage.

If they had been trying to cap the relics and win the game then it is a valid strategy. They weren't instead they were trying to force the game to last as long as possible instead of winning. This is trolling. Regardless of if you are trolling your team or the enemy team it is straight up trolling.

It's a big timewaste for the enemys and a fun killer.

EvilDustMan8/8/2017, 11:28:36 PM16 votes

Having watched the game to the comment at the end, yea, 1 hour, that's holding a game hostage until the other guy surrenders.

I'm surprised so many people voted no on this.

While I don't think this counts as inting, it DEFINITELY counts as griefing.

The reasoning for this is because these people went into a premade with the intent of making the game miserable. It's basically the only reason they would do this.

Also, if they got banned for this, they probably got reported and punished a bunch of times, presumably.

So, a team does a fun stratergy or maybe they just randomly thought and talked about it if it could work, then try it like 5-8 times if it works, and instead of riot maybe first warning them specialy the one with the perma ban, just ban em ? For real now ?

Normal/Ramked games: inters, feeders, afk, open mid while the team doesn't want to, random reports, flame, spam, trolling in ranked FUN (or almost even troll already) MODE/ascencion: a different custom STRATERGY in a STRATERGY GAME.

for real.

Oh and btw, you won't be able to ban everyone doing that, there will now be so many Players doing it specialy scince some Youtubers did that stuff where like atlast 500.000 People saw it already alltogether, have fun banning them all Riot, I am sure the playerbase will enjoy that. Not like you could build in a cap at minute 30 or smth that the team with the most Points win or smth, noooo way. Oh, and i mean you can even laugh about that, i already had to face against one of these teams and i just laughed for the last 20 minutes(ofc we ffed but that's a funmode, who ducking cares about deaths/lost games?). But you know what isn't funny and where you don't do something against ? 4 premades ducking off one single player, Flaming him, telling the enemy team to report him, and who do they belive ? The one guy, or the 4 guys ? HMMMMMM, so you get 9 reports for absolutly doing nothing without playing your game and even carrying at the end, well nothing happend yet with these reports, but i am sure they mark me as more often reported or badplayer for rito members, and I am sure this happend to everyone at last one time with over 400-500 games, it doesn't happen often, but it happens more often then this ascension stratergy.

And for real rito, if you give us ascencion for the 20th time while maybe poroking 2 times between and onetime dark star, it's no wonder that people are borred of playing it normaly, and do some off meta tactics, and it's not like the enemy team had to play that game and couldn't just ff, it's a fun mode who ducking cares about looses in it ????

Loprode8/8/2017, 11:05:56 PM13 votes

Omg they shouldn't have been banned. Just an advertissement would have been ok. Banned 14 days for that ? What a joke.. the guy who created this is very smart and deserve a LoL reward.

Rocket Jesus8/9/2017, 12:38:35 AM10 votes

Maybe if Riot didn't put out the same old game mode every 4 weeks people wouldn't go this far to find alternative ways to enjoy it.

LostFr0st8/8/2017, 11:17:21 PM9 votes

I think this is a good topic for Riot to address directly, as they did with the support Singed and Nunu cases.

Whether "banworthy" or not, they were holding the games of many MANY players hostage and since that topic hit Reddit people were going online to "try it out themselves."

At least until they address it, this was probably the response from the new int feeder detection system. The Vid's pic is also slightly misleading, they died far more times than that.

Squidwards House8/9/2017, 12:28:07 AM8 votes

why would you ban them? "they ruined the fun" when you'd have to ban me aswell cause as soon as an enemy flames in all chat i camp this sucker till he smashes his fucking pc. because i wanna win and the more this guy rages the worse he will play and the higher is our teams chance of winning. dont ban them.

Beas7ie8/9/2017, 2:19:44 AM8 votes

Ok I just saw the vid. Strategy shouldn't be punished. If Rito doesn't like it, they need to fix it with something like letting players B.

But that "ez" that's worthy of a ban.

Going off topic, but I report EVERY player that says "ez" because then, you're just being a dick and trying to tilt.

So unban everyone else but publically execute the ppl that said "ez"

Blakers18/9/2017, 4:38:27 AM8 votes

I think people are missing the point here. Is this strategy cancerous? Of course it is because it completely gets rid of any meaningful progress in this game mode, but is it ban worthy? Not really, at least not at this point. If these guys had played 10 or 20 games of this and potentially hindered the enjoyment of 50 to 100 players then I could see it, but just a few games worth should have warranted a warning sent out to each of these players stating exactly why they were in trouble.

Riot should have directly addressed this issue and worked on a hotfix or disable the queue until they are able to patch it. This leads us to the real question. Why did Riot need to ban these players when the responsibility for this oversight is Riots? A ban fixes this for a small group of players, but has opened the strategy up for thousands of players to abuse, which is going to create a massive influx of games that are ruined.

I don't really think this strategy should be allowed, but to ban someone (let alone a group of people) for finding an exploit in your own system that you advertise as pretty much perfect is ignorant at best.

Also please don't come at me with stuff like "Remember Jordan Belfort? He did this exact thing in real life and we all think he should have been thrown in jail!!??" because that isn't a comparable situation. Stealing millions =/= bringing to light an exploit in a rotating game mode. If anything, Riot banning these people and bringing it to the front page of their forums makes them more comparable to Jordan Belfort than the offenders themselves. Both Belfort and Riot are (were) hindering millions of people with their decisions.

Well guys I have good news!

Hey all, Like u/draggles mentioned yesterday, we’ve been looking into these bans alongside the team over in Europe (where these games/bans occurred). The short version is that we goofed on these bans and are reversing them because these players weren’t intentionally feeding. We believe the pacifist strategy lines up with the “intent to win” policy we laid out earlier this year around other wacky approaches to the game like Support/Smite Singed and roaming Support Nunu. Check out Meddler’s thoughts on all that. As far as Ascension, the pacifist strategy is actually just fine, however it’s deeply unhealthy and unfun when players abuse it to stretch a game to absurd lengths in an effort to force opponents to surrender. We’ll be looking to update the game mode and reduce or remove the viability of this trolly version of the pacifist strategy.

If anything, this entire predicament showcases Riot's ineptness at balancing rotating game modes. There are so many solutions, such as allowing backing in Ascension or setting a time cap for the game itself.

People were asking for URF and Riot gave us months of Ascension of Poro King (don't get me wrong - I like Poro King, but it gets boring after a while). This is what happens when games that are put together with little effort/thought are put out there for months on end.

rito bans people for trying out a different strategy but they arent doing anything with troll and toxic people.

also, they got instantly banned? at least they should've warn them...

I am honestly surprised by all the outrage about the ban. If someone holds you hostage for 2 minutes in champ select, people come complaining about being forced to dodge, but apparently it's a-okay to hold an entire team hostage for 50+ minutes in a full game.

"But they were just using (unintentional) game mechanics" - so are bug abusers, but no one complains when they got banned as well.

Duchu268/9/2017, 7:39:53 PM3 votes

Give a team with the Ascended 1 point/minute or whatever and problem solved!

In regards to the ban tho. I love the hypocrysy of some players. I wonder, if you would be so encouraging and supporting of those guys, if you were on the receiving end of this "strat". Just like with Singed support, couple months ago. 99% of you would report those guys, bet.

EvilDustMan8/8/2017, 11:25:55 PM2 votes

How long did they make the game? Did they actually try to win?
