perma ban for chat?

So my friend got perma banned for talking smack. I am a little confused by this given there is a mute option in game. Riot, just want to know what the justification is for handing out perma bans when you have the mute option available. If someone doesnt want to look at chat, they can simply mute that person. But yet, when someone complains about someone abusing chat you smack a perma ban on that individual and tailor towards a soft sensitive society we live in. I have been playing video games since I can remember and $hit talking from everyone was just a part of it and no one took it serious and moved on with their lives, no one was ever banned BECAUSE THERE WAS A MUTE OPTION. Just want your take on this Riot, thanks!

The existence of the mute button is not an excuse for someone to abuse and harass others through chat. The mute button is very similar to a shield. You have it to protect yourself from being attacked, but that doesn't mean the attacker should be free to attack you without being punished.

There should be a "Perma ban" warning if they are going to go that far.

There is a warning. When players receive a 14 day ban for their behavior, they are explicitly warned in their in-client reform card that their next punishment will be a permanent ban.

Of course, it is possible to skip straight to a permanent ban without any prior punishments, but this would require behavior that is so severe that it should be common knowledge that it's unacceptable. This is generally for things like hate speech, death threats, encouraging suicide, etc., at least as far as chat goes.

So, either your friend has had other punishments prior to this, such as a 14 day ban, and was warned that continuing his behavior would result in a permanent ban, or his behavior was severe enough to warrant an escalation straight to a permanent ban.

Mute option is just temporary solution so u dont have to deal with a-hole. Perma ban is permanent solution so noone has to.

its a permanent solution for that game. What makes it an absolute that he will use chat in another game? The reasoning behind him being banned is because he never bought a skin or champ or any merchandise so Riot perma banned him because they werent going to lose anything from banning him. me? i have bought all champs and some skins and i have gotten chat banned multiple times and temp banned as well. Yet he got perm banned right off the bat.

Posting the chat logs would be the quick and easy way to find the source and put this to rest. Different things trigger the system more or less severely. If he was using racial slurs/hate speech or telling people to off themselves he'd certainly be immediately escalated to 14-day ban status.

Also: money spent has no effect on punishment. If you check the other threads, you'll see many posts of "I spent x yet 14-day/perma Rito why."

14 day ban is a lot different the a perma ban. But why be punished when there is a MUTE button people can use. There should be a "Perma ban" warning if they are going to go that far. Sorry but i disagree with you, I tested it. I got a new account didnt spend any money and was talking up a STORM and boom got perma banned. My account? i have spent about 500 over 5-6 years and never got more then a 7 day and trust me i get frustrated.

Because the Mute button is not an excuse for poor behavior. Furthermore, if your friend has received multiple penalties in the past, or committed a major violation, it is entirely possible to be elevated to a Permanent Ban.

The Penalty tiers are as follows:

10 Game Chat Restriction
25 game Chat Restriction
14 day suspension
Permanent Ban

And again the mute button is not an excuse to be a verbally abusive jerk to someone. If you're forcing other people to mute you then there's a problem with you and not them. From the Tribunal FAQ:

Why is verbal abuse punishable if there is a mute button/language filter? Players shouldn’t need to rely on features like the mute button or language filter to engage with other players in positive ways. When a player verbally abuses another player and forces him to use the mute button, they have already created a negative experience for that player.

You know whats funny? Some people developed certain conspiracy theory that Riot bans accounts that bought a lot of skins, because they would make new account and buy skins again. While your theory is that they ban accounts that dont buy skins just for fun?What would Riot gain from it?

As others have stated, a mute button existing doesn't mean it should be used. We have fire-hydrants, but I doubt people want to have to use them.

There IS a permaban warning, it's included when you make an account in the TOS. Combined with the EULA people say "ok" to every patch, there are also usually 3 levels before a Permaban. (And no, not reading it doesn't count as "no warning")

PUNISHMENTS GENERALLY FOLLOW A BASIC ESCALATION PATH:

First Offense: 10 Game Chat Restriction Second Offense: 25 Game Chat Restriction Third Offense: Two Week Suspension Fourth Offense: Permanent Suspension

However, it is possible to skip to a Two Week or Permanent suspension based on the severity of the behavior in the game. Most people only need one warning to correct their actions.
There is no 7-day ban option. It's chat restricts, 14-day, then perma. IF you are/have encountered a 14 day ban, tread very lightly, as anything worthy of a chat restrict would then trigger the perma. I'd be very happy if people came to the boards to sort out what they did wrong before that point for that reason.

I "talk smack" all the time. If your friend was banned, they did a whole lot worse than "talk smack".

If you think that your chat is so totally and completely useless that absolutely no one should even notice that you typed anything....why did you bother typing? You're expecting absolutely everyone to completely ignore what you say. Why take the time to type something that no one will read?
