My Toxicity got me permanently banned today.

JaxSpider··40 votes·5,477 views

I've been playing this addictive game for almost 3~4 years now. Recently I was temp banned for the same thing. After my ban was lifted I told myself, I will not let that happen again. I would just mute others or walk away and take a breather... but for some reason my temper keeps getting the best of me. I knew it was going to catch up with me. In the back of my head every time I said something, I knew it was going to bite me one day.

Today was that day. I had 3 back to backs horrible games piled up on me. Where someone got under my skin... and I went off on them. Not a little bit but constant nonstop harassment. I was so inflammatory and offensive. I was spewing rage to spite the ones who "offended" me. Just so I can get back at them. I'm not gonna blame anyone but myself. Its a game and it has rules. I knowingly broke the verbal abuse rule. I'm a grown adult and you have no idea how embarrassed I am for what I wrote. Its ridiculous. Re-reading the logs and I can't bury my face into my palms hard enough.

I wish I could say that I'd learn my lesson if I were unbanned but honestly I have no idea how to do that. Every year I'd get temp banned for 14 days, then I'd say I'll learn from it. Then a half a year or so later I'd be back to my old ways. Its so frustrating that I can't control my personality. I know what I did was forbidden behavior, but at that moment my angry was so blinding I couldn't stop myself. Again, its no excuse, just what went through my mind at the time. And now I reap what I sowed.

Hilariously whenever I had chat restrictions (I've had over 500+ of those as well. No proud of this either), I was never nearly as toxic because I had to save my allowed comments for the important things (like MIAs) and because I was already chat restricted it felt like I had a guillotine over my head. When the chat restrictions went away so did the constant dread of punishment. I honestly think that is what some users like myself need permanently. Maybe if the chat box would just become disabled if a negative "trigger" word was written up. If I had a choice, I'd rather be permanently chat resisted or even not allowed to type at all then be permanently banned for being allowed to wrote horrible things.

On a final note, The thing I regret most is not the thousands of games I had on my favorite 3 champs, or the few skins I have, it is that my username has been with me for almost two decades. And now its permanently banned from my favorite game. I wish I could get it back some how. It means too much for me. I wish I could do some sort of community service to show how much I regret my actions.

Thanks for listening,

Jaxspider

I know it's a joke that gets thrown around a lot, but unbinding your enter key is sure to do the trick. How can you be rude if you can't chat? ;)

Sorry to hear about your account. I'm glad that you see your mistakes and are willing to make improvements, though. That's the mindset you need to make sure your next account isn't suspended for the same behavior.

Mind explaining a bit of what that title means, Mr. Elduris, sir? My casual interest has been piqued.

So technically you are pseudo psychologists misplacedly and aimlessly looking to tackle a problem thats behind you instead of in front, you should work on the behavior of riot, not the community. The community is the product of its enviroment.

jaymc11302 votes

The community is the product of its enviroment.

And the enviroent is the product of the community. This is a problem that requires work on both ends, something finally being tried with the implementation of the arbiter program. We now have something working on this end too.

ihaveapotion1 votes

There is no logic whatsoever in saying this enviroment is the product of the community, this enviroment is overseered by riot. They create the conditions where tendency and condition intertwine, a false advertisement of team-spirit psychologically overruled with the illusion of inadequacy. It is all lopsided. League of legends is a toxic enviroment that as long as the direction and desktop (esports/casual) is utmost vague will create malice on its own, not be a victim of it.

Its like the generation old debate over violence in games, anyone with the slightest intellectual capabillity understands violence isnt caused by voilent games, violent reconditioning (conveniently renamed as tilting this era and age) is a natural response to injustice. injustice is directly linked to faulty and unfair mechanics. As i previously defined as the illusion of inadequacy created by the enviroment, not the person.

I should also add there is no such thing as a central body to be defined as "the community", this is a statistical term and statistics do not realistically apply to intelligent life, only to inanimate objects.

Statistics apply to everything mate. Everything that has every existed is part of one statistic or another. Such is the nature of statistics and probability, they are all encompassing.

Only on paper, as i said. In reality theory often falls short and in this case is completely faulty. That is because contrary to the predictable, intelligent life is dynamic and its collaborate and own factors change on a whim.

The community both shapes and is shaped by it's environment. This is true of all communities in human history. Is there usually one aspect or side of the equation that is more lopsided in terms of influence? Sure, that's normal. The point remains the burden is on both us, and riot to work on improving things. Does riot slack in this regard at times or in certain respects? Yeah, I've always thought they were pretty lackluster, and that opinion hasn't changed much, if any, over the years. But does that mean we can eschew our responsibility in this matter and leave it all on riot to clean up? No. Community improvement and growth requires both it's members and it's environment to morph over time into an improved structure, or else it fails completely. If it fails completely, we have no game to play. So the burden is on us/riot to do our part to improve as community members and on riot/us to continue to improve the environment we are placed in.

ihaveapotion2 votes

The influx of bad seeds is only when they percieve to find their level of playingfield. Its like the saying by voltaire that any community that gets its laughs by pretending to be idiots will eventually be flooded by actual idiots who believe they are in good company.

It is about creating precedents. And thats something riot is dreadful at. It is like they have minimal foresight. ..and sadly equally poor hindsight.

Good vocabulary, zero logic.

The OP was quite literally the first to admit the problem rested in his inability to control his profanity, and the overwhelming desire to lash out at others when things aren't going his way. This is a free to play game open to all, Riot can (and should) only have measured responses to prevent this toxic behavior from those incapable from it otherwise.

The thing I cannot believe is the number of bans this person received prior to the final blow. I'm happy and sympathetic to the OP after reading his composed and apologetic post, however he literally has all the chances in the world to curve his behavior, and even he admits that even if his account was restored, there is no guarantee he could help himself from ruining the game for others.

ihaveapotion2 votes

More accurately would be to say contextual logic, reasonable vocabulary. Im a puzzlehead, words are actually my weakness but i do what i can.

Taking blame and shame afterhand is one thing and only admirable in light of ego, pinpointing the cause helps alot more.

This is not a free game for everyone, regardless of being able to play it for free. Alot of us have alot of money in it. I personally have over 700 euros worth of skins. Call me an idiot, ive called myself that over it before. Thing is it cannot be undone anyway. So saying "its a free game" is a bit of an offending matter to alot of customers. (in general, im not likely offended by anything other than policies that are customer unfriendly such as the rework-no-refund policy riot has adopted recently wich is very close to theft)

Again, toxic behavior isnt invasive, it is native to the ecosystem, to put it in scientific terms. Heres a nice quote to reflect on: "ecologists believe that a community that has a high diversity is more complex and stable than a community that has a low diversity."

You see, instability is created when the enviroment is unstable. riot created an unstable enviroment promoting teamplay and focussing on esports wich has a MUCH higher communication ratio, giving people misassumptions even in champion select. They refuse to explain officially to the playerbase that the team enviroment is inconsistent with the reality of any casual qeue and with it create false expectansies. This is the core problem that creates what i would define as the illusion of inadequacy. The feeling of being sabotaged, the feeling of being powerless, by false promises.

THAT is the core of toxicity, no invasive players or 'trolls'. The true amount of such is much much lower than you would ever think true. Why do you think the tribunal failed? Because there are hardly any trolls but people percieve every single failing lane as a troll. Instead of trolls wich has become a blame game term the reality is that people simply are (again) INCONSISTENT. And expectansies are false. Tilting, a 'nicer term for 'raging' is something we all do. Some people dont do it vocally but believe me even the most wellwilling individual has their blood pressure rise because of false expectansies created by the toxic enviroment. Me included. Even i have flipped out more than im content with. I have literally had to punch a boxing bag off my fitness room's wall to calm down once, that was before i started to see what the real problem was. Instead of reflecting on myself and my feeling of being inadequate i started to understand the enviroment setted me up for that feeling. So everytime i meet another afk, another person who has a horribly bad game or people that are tilting, i blame riot. Not them.

There is no logic whatsoever in saying this environment is the product of the community

There seems to be one underlying problem to your argument: you seem to believe that human decisions are determined by the environment and not by the person. (why do you play a competitive game if you think that you have no influence on it's outcome?)

Yet, you show in a later post that you know that this is not true:

statistics do not realistically apply to intelligent life, only to inanimate objects.

While the statement itself isn't very accurate, it shows that you believe that you believe that your personal choice gives you the power to overcome outside pressures, thereby contradicting your previous statements about conditioning.

I only wish this kind of problem were less common.

ihaveapotion1 votes

This is NOT a competitive game, it lacks communication to be competitive and besides good intentions with the ping system still contains a much confusing remnant of its past mistakes; chat. Combined with a lack of community direction by riot not naming the true itention of and removing toxic systems such as soloque. It is the core of the problem i have been adressing for atleast a year now. False advertising that creates the frustration by false expectansies.

On your second point, i do not base my knowledge on statistics and never have. I base my knowledge on logic and reason. Perhaps this is a difference for my generation, i wouldnt know how people's thought processes and information engineering is formed in schools these days.

Yes personal choice gives you power to overcome outside pressure, but this is a VERY steeply curved process to a native that only very few manage. Again, pressure is enviromental. If you come from an enviroment not native you'll manage otherwise, if you come from no enviroment at all, youll have a sense of oversight. (classified as thinking outside the box, as its more well known concept) But do not forget the infinite factors, every tweak to the enviroment has a butterfly effect.

ihaveapotion2 votes

There is an equal amount of intellectual life if not higher compared to life walloping in stupidity. The latter is merely more vocal. Do you notice the people who explode in verbal rage or those who remain silent throughout the game. Exactly.

And those who remain silent will find themselves turning into the first soon enough. Because league of legends is like a brainwashing machine crushing all understanding untill all you're doing is picking meta champs and precasting flash 100-0s.

Again, enviromental.

All life is at its base equal aside from (again enviromental, even when physical) handicaps that cause them to be less. We are molded to precedents and dogmatic ceilings. Then intensity is further adjusted through chemical imbalances. Thats why some people end up punching holes in their walls, because their blood sugar is through the roof from drinking too much energy drinks and eating coated donuts while sitting on their ass all day long.

You can unbind or bind mostly any key in the options menu, including the enter key.

ihaveapotion3 votes

When someone is "being a jerk to you" the solution is to see it for what it is. The person is mentally struggling with the situation, nothing he says is truly personal to you and thusfor should you not take it personal, no matter how taunting.

But if you add on too much stress?

Your performance plummets. And in a team oriented game, stressing out your teammates in turn doesn’t just make a match far less fun for everyone than it would otherwise be, it can also decrease your chances of winning or making a comeback.

The way people throw in this game is a massive trigger to me as well. People become SO arrogant SO quickly it is just incredible, and ultimately they lose because of it (and secretly I'm happy they do, because they deserve it). But despite all of that, they never learn and it happens game after game after game.

I still have no solution to how I react to this apart from unplug my keyboard so that I don't rage-type as I watch them self-destruct in their own inflated ego.

Afking is not an acceptable in game action and is in fact about as toxic an action as there is. Sometimes life happens and ya have to leave the game for a bit. Just afking cuz you aren't feeling it is unacceptable, particularly in ranked.

9kPluzZ1 votes

Can you explain to me why its unacceptable? If I'm not enjoying something, that's supposed to be FUN, for MY leisure time,I do something else, rather than waste what little time i have. Is this a video-game or fucking jury duty?

It's a video game sure, but there's also a commitment element. When you queue up for a game you make a commitment to that team to help them achieve victory.

It's like playing a pick up game of basketball with your friends vs playing a pick up game with strangers vs playing a league game in basketball league you signed up for. In the first case your friends will probably understand if you just leave em hanging and probably won't be mad at you for breaking that commitment. In the second case you just left complete strangers hanging and maybe even killed the game prematurely. All those people want what you wanted too, to have fun with their leisure time, and you took that possibility away from them. It's pretty inconsiderate. In the third case this is a league you signed up for, so just leaving the team hanging mid game is a serious action to take. The league might not let you come back because you've proven you can't handle your commitments and they would be right to ban you from the league.

Imagine all those situations, but now as league of legends games, normals with your friends, normals with strangers, and a ranked game. No matter how you slice it you deny 9 other people the thing you say you want, a good time. Thats unbelievably selfish and rude. If you don't want to play, don't queue in the first place or make a custom game with all bots so you don't hurt other players. That's just part of being a decent person. It's not jury duty, but you're certainly in the wrong and acting improperly if you afk from a game of league of legends. That's never an appropriate action.

Neither. Consistent afk reports are taken into account for permanent ban decisions as afking is also a toxic action.

He'd have been best off by keeping his frustration in check and remembering it's a game.

Are you kidding? There is no less amount of trolling or afking in high level play. If anything, it may be more common, its definitely equally common at the very least. About half of every game I play at every level, no matter the account is trolled or afked from. About 50%. At the lower levels stupidity or simple bad play may seem like trolling but its usually not the case. But intentional actions the are detrimental to the team and taken solely to piss teammates off as well as afks happen constantly at every level. Watch some pro streamers, tell me how many of those games out of 10 have an afk. Tell me how many of those have a straight up troll. Watch 100 games. You'll see, it happens just as much. Its constant.
