A proposed solution to having disconnected players in ranked play
In ranked play, there are few things more frustrating than having a teammate who never connects to your game. Not only are you nearly certain to lose League Points, but due to the surrender mechanics of League, you have to wait until 20 minutes to surrender, all the while being bullied by a team who knows they have a massive 5v4 advantage. Now, on rare occasion, I've won that 4v5, and it's extremely satisfying, but that isn't the point. The point is that, the vast majority of the time, 4 people lose League Points in an unfair manner, while all 9 players are robbed of the enjoyment of a real game. And there's no reason why it needs to be this way. I propose a simple solution, that I believe will be both fair and effective.
If any player doesn't connect to the game, from the very beginning (no dropping 90 seconds in because your adc got afk killed in tribush), the game initiates a "disconnected player" timer. Once that timer reaches a pre-determined time - say between 5 and 10 minutes - the disadvantaged team will gain the ability to surrender and receive a "loss prevented" game result. This early surrender option will remain available for only a few minutes (2 or 3) after which, if the surrender option isn't taken, the game will be played out as normal. If the player reconnects before the allotted time expires, the timer is dismissed, and the game continues as normal. There are many benefits to this solution:
- It gives a disconnected player a reasonable amount of time to reconnect before initiating the early surrender.
- It prevents the unfair loss of League Points for players who randomly get disconnected teammates.
- It allows teams to gamble on winning a 4v5 if they feel they have a shot at it.
- It reduces the amount of time lost to games with disconnects.
The disconnected player, in the meantime, should receive the normal penalties of someone who drops a game/lobby: loss of League Points, queue timer, potential disciplinary action, etc.
I think this is a good solution to the problem. What do you think? Is this something you would recommend to Riot to institute in a future patch?
