🔒 Why isn't Irelia played more often?
I've been a support main all season, and this is the first season I've tried any sort of ranking up. In my opinion, it took me a lot longer to get out of Bronze than I think it should've. I attribute this to the fact that supports can't really determine the outcome of a game, at least not in the same sense that carries do; especially when you're plagued with mids that feed, JGs that forget smite, and ADCs who think they're the main engage.
I do truly enjoy support. I know people who have never played it tend to say it's a useless role, but it's far from. It's my belief that, without supports, jungles would constantly be bot lane, getting fed off the ADCs. No one else would really focus on peeling for the squishies in team fights, 'cause all solo laners want to do well personally and flame the teammates who don't.
In general, the majority of support champs are my favorite champs in game and that's a big part of why I play support.
All of that aside, in normal games I've got at least 300+ games per role from before I decided I want to focus on support. Top and jungle were the other two I was close to choosing; I like how jungles determine the overall outcome of the laning phase, and I like how secluded top feels. Just a constant 1v1 (unless you're Dyrus).
A couple weeks ago when Irelia was free I thought I'd give her a try and see if I'd like to occasionally play top again. I do have a ton of fun playing the likes of Gnar and Renek, but I wanted to try someone who seems more capable of carrying, but isn't too mechanical (like Fiora and Riven).
I ended up solo-carrying in my Irelia game. I don't know if it was legitimate "beginners luck" or not, but it lead to me wondering:
Is she seriously this strong? Why do I almost never see her played? Why isn't she banned every game if a support main like me can jump on her and carry a game? Yes, it was "just norms", but in all honesty I end up against higher ranks (golds-plat, sometimes diamond) in my norms than I do in my ranked (bronze-silver, sometimes gold).
My favorite part about my own Irelia experience was that I could 1v1 Kassadin or Yi at any point, and as far as I know there aren't many champs who can 1v1 mid-late game Yi.
