Variance in player behavior between bots and PvP

Ranking up a new account vs bots, and for the most part the company wasn't bad. But the situation was different in PvP draft match where the quality of conversation was substantially worse -- so much so that I would rather not attend those matches. It was still five people in a chat box on the Rift most of the time, so what changed?

Perhaps it's because most RPG & MMO style games don't offer defeat as an option. There are lots of games that harass, demean and/or frustrate, but they all assume the player will eventually defeat an end boss or some such.

Maybe the slay dad and take his place archetype doesn't translate well to a ten-man sport.

Bot games are literally only for people who are brand new (nothing to flame if you don't know how the game works) or people who are super bad or casual who don't care about winning. It will always be toxicity free because there are no consequences for losing (and if one wants to win it is impossible to lose).
