The watcher's (Vel'koz), who we know wanted to take over the freljord, attacked and killed his family.
Gnar grew enraged and fought back.
Lissandra (who fought with the watchers) froze him in ice.
My interpretation/prediction as to what this means and what his lore will pertain to

But the creature in the Mecha Vel´koz spalshart in the background,could be a watcher,as it ressambles the statue on the purple side in the Howling abbys.
Meep Man1 votesI believe the creature you are talking about would be Battlecast Anivia. It was showed long ago that she was planned at some time for a Battlecast skin.

You can also see it when you recall with Battlecast Victor, plans go float around him.
grifxdonut1 votesI don't think he was in freljord. the river, the vines in the background of the web page, the sun. they make it seem like its in a regular environment. and the mountains in addition to the small furry animals make me think of the yordles. it may be any of the watchers, seeing that the yordles were becoming too smart, so it attacked them. gnar, being a brave warrior, fought the monster and absorbed some of its void-iness and became a feral monster. while still having some humanity, he ran away into a cave where he was frozen for centuries.
Meep Man1 votesI think it's much simpler or much more simpler worded than that. To put it straight, yordles/strange furry creatures were happily living (Gnar as leader?), when the Watchers or some form of Ice Creatures attacked, freezing the clan of yordles/furry creatures along with Gnar. Now that he has gotten out, I think he is pretty pissed and has a good reason to be since his family is most likely dead and he was frozen for many years.
Gõd Fûhrer Trümp1 votesIm just saying it resembles Vel'koz and im acknowledging the fact that is could be vel'koz. Im more inclined to believe that vel'koz' species were the watchers rather then vel'koz himself being a watcher
