LoL client causing Alt-Tab to desktop when pressing mouse side buttons [CLIENT]

Whenever the LoL Client opens, the first fullscreen program (Tested: LoL and OSU) will alt tab once when pressing the side buttons on my mouse. This has been repeated on my configuration consistently using the following steps:

  1. Open LoL Client and other fullscreen application
  2. In Fullscreen application, an input of the mouse buttons (most often side buttons) will cause the game to alt tab. This has happened in League of Legends matches as well as in OSU

The bug only happens once on client start and does not happen again until the client is restarted/ computer is restarted. It has happened almost every instance

same issue ive died so many times because im pressing mouse buttons for target champion only and it alt tabs out and i die lol indie game company

I used the suggestion of a full closing of the game, logging in, and then entering practice tool for testing. I did several rounds of testing since this happens to me as well. (Windows 7). I was reliably replicating the issue.

In my particular case I've observed the following behavior. (This all being after the release of the new login/client system.)

  1. The first instance of me using Mouse 4 or Mouse 5 in game resulted in an alt-tab event to desktop. Mouse 1-3 all work fine. I even went so far as to run down the keyboard and hit every key but no single key press caused an alt-tab event.

  2. After the first use, it does not happen again unless I close out of League completely. Even with the "Close client during game" option enabled it seemed not to be occurring again so long as my current login session was still alive.

  3. I tested the suggested solutions and none of them appeared to change this behavior.

  4. It even happens as early as the loading screen. This can be leveraged to get that first alt-tab out of the way before the match begins.

  5. In my practice tool tests I did not observe any activity at the desktop once the alt-tab completed. (The old Windows Key alt-tab in some games would pop the start menu, for example)

I have not had this kind of issue with any other games other than the ol' Windows key nonsense (so I popped that key off my keyboard). I'd guess it's something to do with the "League of Legends*32.exe" process or perhaps a related config file that works with it. Mouse 4 and 5 (in my case) can operate as forward and back buttons while browsing folders (Explorer.exe) and in web browsers like Chrome. (Not sure if related to the interaction we're seeing here.)

Is anyone seeing it happen more than once per session or is it only the first click like in my case?

If you guys want to recreate this problem, make sure to do it this way:

  • Open the League Client

  • Jump into a Practice Game

  • Buy the trinket ward item 3361

  • Place the trinket ward with your mouse side button (spam it if you have to, as long as the ward is placed).

  • Screen should have alt-tabbed

  • To recreate again, exit the game and go back to the first step

So far I see the following solutions listed:

  1. delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\officebackgroundtaskhandler.exe

  2. Had the same problem, client settings, check close client during game, fixed it for me!

  3. using a program that allows you to rebind mouse buttons (razer synapse for razer mice, etc), then binding the mouse button causing the issue to an unused keyboard key like one on the numpad, then rebinding the mouse button in league settings to the unused key you set the mouse button to earlier

  4. Right click on league exe file, go to properties, open the first tab in the section and check the box "read only" hit apply and save

I have tested them. These are the results:

  1. Didn't delete it (don't want to break office) but I renamed it and looked for any tasks running named like this. Didn't work for me. Annie

  2. Changed "Close client during game" to true at "Gear Icon > General > Close client during game". This one works! Jinx

  3. I don't really use a mouse rebind program and don't really want to, so I didn't test this one. Rakan

  4. Set LeagueClient.exe at "C:\Riot Games\League of Legends" to Read-Only. This one works! Jinx

Overall I feel this is an issue derived from how the new client interacts with your input (mouse buttons, specifically side button for me) as this wasn't happening before the client was introduced.

delete C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Office\root\Office16\officebackgroundtaskhandler.exe and it worked for me. also i uninstalled microsoft office but idk if that had to do anything with the alt tab issue

found this response from a RIoter on Twitter: "Update - we found the cause - the first mouse 4 press will minimize the game (but not after this). We are working on a fix ASAP.

In the mean time if you have this issue just M4 right after loading in and it won't happen later in the game when it might matter."

I have the same thing happening to me! It's always the beginning of every single game. Same thing is happening in PBE but once I "fix" it with tabbing back in, I get fps stutters when I ping.. Never had issues with lag before since I have the newest hardware.

This needs way more attention. I have this issue every game, as well as my duo. And it seems whenever I have the league client open in the background, even while playing another game, and go to use a mouse button it just immediately alt-tabs me or closes the program. Maybe it has something to do with the new client?

I've had this problem for almost over a month now, thought it was only me but apparently not. Please fix this cause I use my mouse buttons for all my actives and this makes a lifesaver like item 3140 a deathbringer instead.

I have a similar problem and it has gotten me killed 3 or 4 times now (only happens in game for me). I was wondering if it was only me but I guess you all here have the problem. How would we create more awareness of this issue?

Ahh I can't believe I found this thread, like many others posting here I thought I was the only one! I thought it might have to do with my hardware as I just bought a new keyboard and mouse from Razer. It was so frustrating to hit the mouse key then tab out in the heat of battle and die looking like an AFK. [zombie-nunu-bummed]

Kind of glad and annoyed that it might have something to do with the new League client at least now I don't have to return my new toys. [slayer-jinx-catface]

I'm having this problem too for the last like 3 weeks or more. Thought it was some bug with my Razer mouse side buttons having some secret macro to go to desktop or something but I guess not. Have my Mouse button 4 bound to my flash, so every time I flash for the first time I alt tab to desktop, gotten me killed numerous times. Irritating as hell.

Have had this same problem for over a month now.... mouse buttons will randomly cause me to tab out during games... kinda hinders me wanting to spam ranked if multiple times a game I will basically afk....

I have the same problem. I have MB4 and MB5 bound to trinket and item 6 (which is where i put my health potions) and in-game when I use either one of them for the first time it'll tab me out. It only happens once per game but it's just so inconvenient and awkward.

We are starting to sneak dragon , someone throws a ward from behind the pit, so I mouse button ping "enemy has vision", game tabs out, next thing you know they took dragon and the enemy ad got a triple kill. XD

I've actually stopped playing league and so have my friends, it's too frustrating to play with, and riot seems to be ignoring all of the threads about it.

Not trying to necro a kinda old thread but has anyone heard anything about this? I use a g600 and if i press "too many" buttons during a teamfight or anything the game basically locks the mouse out and they stop working or my game minimizes.

im currently having the same issue also, mouse is a Corsiar M65 Pro RGB. I have mastery emote bond to mouse button for, and occasionally when i press it sometimes it will alt tab me. Now I've tried to sit around and recreate but to no avail. will continue testing and edit this post if i find anything.
