You were looking in the wrong place. You need to forcefully kill the League of Legends game client when that happens. What you have there is the main/air client. Those are two different systems.

It happened to me the other day. If you don't kill the process, you'll be stuck there until the match ends.

Right click icon on desktop. Run as admin. Worked for me.

Scroll through that page on the task manager and kill ALL League operations that you can see. They should be easily spotted since they have the signature L logo and name to do with League. While you kill the process you may also see it being duplicated, kill them all until none remain.

Then you are safe to restart the client.

I do agree that this is extremely annoying, though.
