Buying Cinderhulk Without Smite (Deletes components and takes gold)

I was playing new Garen today. I ran Flash Teleport and it was late in the game. I had bought Bami's Cinder intending to build it into a Sunfire Cape. I was dead, as far as I can remember, and browsing the shop when I realized the icons for all of the Cinderhulk items were lit as if I could buy them. Thinking that perhaps the new patch had made it available to those not running smite I decided to try and buy it. It took the Bami's Cinder from my inventory and took the gold for the complete item too. I didn't check to see if I got any benefits from the item but I'm pretty sure I didn't. I'll try to supply any relevant information if needed as best I can remember.
