When I joined a queue for champion selection the screen turned black right after i entered and stayed black until it kicked me from the lobby.

Freezing, crashing, black screens or errors in champ select then is usually a result of a failure to establish a stable connection to the servers. Champ Select in all modes requires a more steady connection than the home page as picks (and bans for Draft) are processed in real-time.
