[CRASH] Game launch crashes on 9.20 under WINE

Crashing in-game on patch 9.20 - "A critical error has occurred"

As mentioned on the r/leagueoflinux subreddit no games can launch under WINE as of 9.20. I know Linux isn't officially supported but there is a passionate group of players who only play on Linux, myself included. I was very pleased to see that League ran well under WINE and haven't had any issues playing all summer. I hope this bug can get resolved soon either by Riot, WINE, or the Lutris AppImage maintainers.

I'm playing under Lutris but any WINE installation should work.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Launch client under WINE
  2. Login
  3. Launch any game mode. In this case, try practice tool.

I am yet another happy Linux player who can't play your broken game any more, Riot. Worse yet, when I switch back to Windows, I can't get into game either. The irony of all this is that the cheaters you were probably trying to block probably can bypass your anti-cheat system already anyway (they usually figure out workarounds within a day or two, while it takes the Linux community weeks to catch up because we don't cheat).

Affects me too. Linux mint 18, on WINE. Very sad as was working to climb up to gold for end of season :(

Yep, same here on Arch Linux (5.3.4-zen)

Lost a ranked game because of those crashes. I get that Linux isn't officially supported, but c'mon

In 2017, riot games posted that we should keep our hopes up for Linux support "in the near future".

Is 2019 "near future" enough ?

By some miracle, your post stayed alive without anyone coming in saying "but why don't you just install windows ? that's what everybody does !". I make the incredible prediction that someone will post that soon "in the near future".

If you cook your vegan friend some meat, you better not say "but why can't you just eat this meat ? that's what everybody does !".

I stopped playing LoL 4 years ago due to toxic community but decided to come back and give it another go this week. Did my ranked placements yesterday no problem. Today I figure I'll try a few more ranked games but discover that the game is completely broken and unplayable. To add insult to injury the system slaps a game loss penalty even though I could not get into the game due to a buggy patch.

I remember 4 years ago it was a pain in the ass working around all the bugs in the client but it seems that things have only gotten worse. From what I can tell the crashes seem to be due to some anti-cheating spaghetti code clobbered into the game.

The worse part is RIOT isn't working to resolve the problem, they won't even take the time to publicly achnowledge the current situation. I get that RIOT management does not value the 1-2% of their income that comes from players who primarily use linux but it's not so hard to at least allow someone to test changes on linux ahead of time to see if a patch is completely broken. Heck, that would provide them with better QA on their code for a more stable windows client.

If it's not fixed in the next week I will be moving on to other games. Just wish I could take the money that I spent back.

Bump - Any updates? A bug was filed on the WINE tracker https://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=47915 The issue was also mentioned on the Lutris forums https://forums.lutris.net/t/lol-critical-error-whenever-starting-the-game/7218

Maybe RiotBoatStuff can give us a update?

Yes they should have done a native client by now, it doesn't make sense to be able to have a client for apple devices and not for Linux... For now my friends in Linux one alternative ( which I also don't like but I have no choice) is passthrough your gpu on a win10 vm with looking glass and play, its a nice project also...

That's a sad situation. "Nobody " uses Linux because there isn't any game on it. But no producer release game on Linux because there is no player.

Just break that circle Riot ! I want to play my little Lux Lux a little time more !

Martagnan10/12/2019, 1:06:31 PM2 votes

I am affected as well. It is also sad not only for the Linux players but also for all other players having to face 4v5's because the Linux player cannot join the game. So basically these issues are making the game bad for a way larger base of players than just the Linux one's.

The patch linked by RiotBoatStuff works! Thank you everyone who worked so expediently getting us unblocked. I was able to play throughout the weekend!

This bug can be closed.

Bump - I was hoping to get an update from a Riot employee by End-Of-Week. I wasn't hoping for much, but at least an acknowledgement that they are aware of the issue.

If I have any new information regarding workarounds or patches I'll let everyone know here.

EDIT: See RiotBoatStuffs reply here https://boards.na.leagueoflegends.com/en/c/bug-report/rJNQJbHh-crash-game-launch-crashes-on-920-under-wine?comment=000c0000

I know Riot is totally pooping on Linux, but at least, he should support Wine, if not Linux natively.
