I've tried the Hextech Repair tool and it's given no results. To be quite fair, this whole issue is ridiculous and it's unfathomable that this isn't on the top of the Mac client team's priority list. Sure, the game works, but the rest of the computer is nigh unusable — you always have to hover apps to figure out what's what in the dock. Quick app switching via CMD+TAB (the ALT+TAB equivalent of Windows) is seriously hindered, too, since no icons are shown.
Here's what works:
- After an update is applied, removing the icon.icns file and the info.plist file, rebuilding the icon cache and rebooting
Here's what doesn't work:
- Rebuilding the icon cache (as shown here, or alternatively here) after LoL has installed an update
- Running LoL from a separate volume, not adding it to the root Applications folder — shortly after an update the issue resurfaces
- Changing the icon file permission so that it cannot be read
The last point leads me to believe the issue isn't the actual icon itself – possibly a malformed .plist file or something similar.
The issue should be ridiculously easy to track down – simply take the last know version where the issue didn't occur and then manually apply patches until the issue appears. If the number of patches/changes is large, it's straightforward to speed up the process using git bisect, for example, which is essentially a binary search for bug-introducing code changes.
Here's hoping the issue get's solved asap.
