[CLIENT] Updating on Mac High Sierra messes up other application icons

any way of fixing aliases? * r/MacOS

Any time I download an update, it causes other applications on my Mac to have their icons go missing (most notable in the dock area). This has been happening on both High Sierra and Sierra before it for a long time. Attached reddit thread shows an example.

Here's another thread showing that LoL causes the issue: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/8098050

To recap on the previous comment I made, this shell script seems to do the job, for the time being.
I'm not going to note down how to run it since if you don't know, you probably shouldn't be running scripts from the internet.

Needless to say that this is far from an ideal solution and it would be really nice to see Rito fix this.

I've tried the Hextech Repair tool and it's given no results. To be quite fair, this whole issue is ridiculous and it's unfathomable that this isn't on the top of the Mac client team's priority list. Sure, the game works, but the rest of the computer is nigh unusable — you always have to hover apps to figure out what's what in the dock. Quick app switching via CMD+TAB (the ALT+TAB equivalent of Windows) is seriously hindered, too, since no icons are shown.

Here's what works:

  • After an update is applied, removing the icon.icns file and the info.plist file, rebuilding the icon cache and rebooting

Here's what doesn't work:

  • Rebuilding the icon cache (as shown here, or alternatively here) after LoL has installed an update
  • Running LoL from a separate volume, not adding it to the root Applications folder — shortly after an update the issue resurfaces
  • Changing the icon file permission so that it cannot be read

The last point leads me to believe the issue isn't the actual icon itself – possibly a malformed .plist file or something similar.

The issue should be ridiculously easy to track down – simply take the last know version where the issue didn't occur and then manually apply patches until the issue appears. If the number of patches/changes is large, it's straightforward to speed up the process using git bisect, for example, which is essentially a binary search for bug-introducing code changes.

Here's hoping the issue get's solved asap. summoner 7

Holy god! THIS SO MUCH THIS. This has been driving me crazy for a year now (actually started in Sierra). The suggested reboot into safe mode fix works only temporarily and breaks after a few days. I can't believe I finally stumbled on a cause... a year man. Please for the love of god fix this.

Noticed this happens whenever League updates. Along with the Sierra/High Sierra broken in game bug where the game over-saturates the CPU and drops frames. No interest in fixing from Riot; and as usual "Customer Service" player support is just an email that says "sorry, I can't fix it."

Hi,

Same problem here. Happens every time there is a lol update. Every update messes also with Safari "Share" button (who loose almost all its content) and shortcuts (some don't work, like cmd-shift-I). This bug has been here from a long time ago and is very annoying.

I am having the same problem. Please fix this!

I've been having this issue for the past 4 months combined with Sierra/High Sierra. I've even spent time with Apple support trying to fix it, updated to High Sierra because they though that would fix it, but it's still there. I almost wiped/re-installed my entire OS :|. It's not just an icon problem, because some apps now randomly say they are "damaged or incomplete" and don't run anymore.

This is a SERIOUS bug Riot. Please fix it!

Same problem here!!!. I formatted my Mac yesterday and since the installation of LOL, some apps icons are missing in the dock and Launchpad. Also, sometimes while I'm playing, the game quit unexpectedly and It's a bit disgusting. Please Riot fix it!!!

Updated League of Legends 2 days ago on macOS High Sierra (version 10.13.3) and today half of my application icons do not show. The problem seems to indiscriminately affect default macOS applications as well as third party programs. This bug is embarrassing. I've never seen a piece of software mess up my operating system so much. Fix this immediately, Riot, or I will uninstall this game without hesitation and not play it until it is fixed.

same here. Just installed league on a mac, and now icons for the apps that came with the OS are missing. 3rd party app icons still working.

Hey Everyone I contacted RIOT, and they answered me with a possible solution. Try using the Hextech Repaor tool. It should fix the client. If not it will generate a log file. Send that log file to RIOT. I haven't had the chance to try it out myself, so I don't know if it actually works.

This happened to me after updating also. Anyone have any ideas how to fix this without scripts?

Can we please have an update on this error? Can any expectations about a turn around time be provided? Between the insufferable crashes and this I'm really disappointed to see the issue is as old as it is with no ETA for a fix : (

I'm also having this issue, but not only after an update, also at random times after a game finishes and I'm brought to the honor screen. So far the only way to resolve has been temporary: needing to boot in safe mode and restart. The more this occurs, the less inclined I am to play the game, as I'd rather not have to keep wasting time with an extra safe boot every night. Can we get an acknowledgement of this ticket? Even without an ETA, is this on the support team's radar or in the engineering backlog?

I also have this issue. Replicable by updating League of Legends on my Macbook Pro 2012 Retina. Running High Sierra.

Go on to the terminal and type in killall Dock. It refreshes the launchpad and the dock.

Timvdv2/8/2018, 10:07:22 PM1 votes

Holy Sh** I just noticed this was the cause. I've been fighting this issue for almost a year, I reinstalled MacOS because of this.. And it's the broken League client.. Ofcourse. Maybe I should just uninstall the game.

TheCodeKing2/18/2018, 5:16:30 PM1 votes

RIOT FIX THIS OMG. How can league destroy Mac OS his dock icons, this is rigged.

shad0w2/20/2018, 2:28:03 AM1 votes

I've been experiencing this issue for over a year and finally found out from this post that LoL causes this after every patch. The only solution for me to fix this after every patch update is to restart my computer, which is very annoying while working on other applications. I really hope Riot fixes this... The old client was much better for me as a Mac user.

Timvdv6/27/2018, 6:09:15 PM1 votes

Does anyone know if this problem is still present? I want to play ARURF but I'm not going to install the launcher if this bug is still present.

Sipuś2/19/2018, 6:52:53 PM1 votes

I've same problem since update macOS to 10.13. I'd restored for 6 hours my data from mac because I do clean install (without use restore from Time Machine) with hope that would help me. I called to Apple Support and their just answered: "Are you have League of Legends installed? Many people reported that their had same problem and the cause was that game".

Guys, what's the special in icon's cache that you must interfere in it? Are you really must forcing me to switch to Dota?
