How do u spend more gold than you earn in a game? match link provided

After looking at the advanced details from our game. I noticed that my opponent Darius only earned 18k gold but he actually spent 23k gold! How is that even possible? I'm not entirely familiar with so maybe he has a passive like but i feel like that would still count as earned gold.

his items altogether only add up to 15.5k gold. my guess would be that he sold some items

If he did sell his items wouldn't that factor into gold earned? Usually you end up selling items for half the price of when you bought it. Im not saying this isnt possible but just wondering what would bring this about.
