Aurelion Sol Orbs unpredictable

I played Aurelion Sol on ARAM today. I wanted to get to know him just a bit better and I discovered that when using his W the orbs would behave in a very erratic fashion.

When I pressed w to expand the circle of influence the orbs would first rotate quickly around me and I would have no idea where they were supposed to be on the outer perimeter (I managed to get a few cs this way just by accident.)

When I pressed w to retract the orbs they would expand outward to the edges of my screen before returning to their proper locations.

Any ideas?
