Relic Shield on Thresh is not Executing {GAMEPLAY}

I played a game as Thresh last night and this morning. In both games my Relic Shield would never execute. My ADC and I would still receive the smite bonus if I last hit the minion, however, last hitting as Thresh was very difficult because my item would never "execute." I.e., usually relic shield allows you to smite a minion when they still have quite a bit of HP left, but I can only smite the minion for my ADC when it has almost no HP. I haven't experienced this with any other support than Thresh. But it was pretty annoying and even cost my ADC her life at least once because I couldn't smite minions to get her HP back (then in a very close trade she got killed).

Thresh is range champion, execute works on melee only.

the execution effect is melee only, read the tooltip. Thresh is ranged --> he can't execute minions

Thresh is considered ranged, thus the execute on relic shield does not work for him.

The reason Relic Shield is a recommended item is because Thresh is a tank and for most tanks it's recommended since it helps them get tankier than the Coin which used to be Thresh's recommended starting item. However... most tank supports are melee. Except Thresh. The reason you can't Execute is because the Execute as it says in the item, requires a melee attack. The gold generation however, works no matter how you kill the minion, so lasthitting it normally will grant the gold anyway, if you're able to lasthit.

Now Thresh is a special case all of his own: as you probably know he actually has 3 attack animations depending on his range. I've managed to do the Execute before but that's only when standing very close to the minion so he does the smaller "cut" animation with just the sickle part, in stead of whipping with the chain from range.

I'm not sure if it's been changed since, but his melee animation used to count as a melee attack for the Execute, although sadly I remember it being pretty hard to achieve so you're better off lasthitting with ranged attacks anyway. =) But I hope that helps explain the mechanics of his autoattacks in relation to the Execute mechanic.
