Tahm Kench making targets imune to damage

Occasionally when I try to devour a minion it will just pop out and be immune to damage for a short time. It has happened with both minions and Malzahars creation. I am unsure how this happens, but it happens freaquently. I have seen it happen at least twice in a game multiple games.
