On your friends list, go to options --> then check the two boxes to make offline and mobile friends in their own folders.
If you leave these folders CLOSED! there will be no more black screen, I have 70 friends online and it's working just fine now.

Thanks a ton, man. Also, Rito - think about putting this somewhere more visible until you come up with a fix.
This did NOT fix the problem for me. I no longer had a black screen, but instead no champions appeared at all so the outcome was the same (couldn't lock in, forced to dodge).
The least Riot could do is give people a notification in the client that this is an issue, seeing as an extremely large amount of people have this problem on 7.4. That way people wouldn't get screwed out of their promos and LP for something that is not the player's fault.
