Help Riot troubleshoot the mac bug

Hi Summoners who use a Mac,

First off, you all are awesome and I want to emphasize that the existing Mac issue is a serious one to us. We verify every build on a Mac and test on Macs as well. Unfortunately, we dropped the ball this time and will strive to do better next time for you guys!

In the meantime, I would like more information to help pinpoint what the potential issues are since it was clearly introduced in the most recent patch (4.17). In particular, I'd like to know the following:

For items 1-3, hit the Apple icon in the top left, then "About this mac", then "More info"

  1. What is your OSX version?
  2. What type of Mac are you running (Macbook, Macbook Pro, etc) + year number
  3. What graphics chipset are you running
  4. What is the rough frequency of the crash per game for each game mode/type?
  • e.g. Custom 5v5 arams, matchmade 3v3 treeline, normal 5v5
  • Don't try this in ranked and consider making a smurf to test matchmade games (but only if you don't already know the crash frequency for matchmade games)
  1. Do the crashes happen on PBE currently? (answer in a similar fashion to #4)

Any information you can provide would be very useful. In addition, if you leave a summoner name, I may contact you on my LoL account (Riot3ous) to get more information.

We identified yesterday TWO sources of a large number of crashes that unfortunately managed to slip in on a single patch. Turns out, they caused Windows crashes as well. A hotfix has been deployed. Thanks all for your patience.

Not sure if this is useful, but after every one of these 4.17 Mac crashes, there are patches of "false vision" after reconnecting at top, bot lane and the baron pit where the lighting is bright like its warded but you can't see anything you shouldnt.

Maybe the bug is related to vision?

My system specs are as follows:

Processor 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7 Memory 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Graphics NVIDIA GeForce GT 750M 2048 MB Software OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

I checked the console, and without fail, before the game crashes, there are a dozen or so errors that follow this format:

I feel like I've seen these errors prior to this update... but not with this frequency.

Clearly, there's some kind of reference to a pointer that was already freed... Then, in the actual log file itself (attached), the exception type is EXC_BAD_ACCESS, and then we get a KERN_PROTECTION_FAILURE.

SO... Somewhere in your code, you're referencing a pointer that doesn't exist anymore...and then when you attempt to access it, the OS says "NO", and immediately kills the application.

ok i just logged back into my account and leavebuster has banned my account. I have never left a game or been idle except for the crashes caused by this bug. What is riot going to do ??? My accounts are banned due to a BUG they created.

  1. OSX Mavericks 10.9.4
  2. Mac Mini mid 2011 - I upgraded the RAM. The default was 2 GB (two 1 GB chips). I upgraded to 8 GB (two 4 GB chips), kingston brand, mac approved.
  3. Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB
  4. Summoner's rift ranked solo/duo - maybe once every 2 or 3 games. I haven't been playing other modes. If this bug wrecks ranked games, so be it. Better fix it fast.
  5. no PBE access

EDIT: didn't mean to sound like a dick or anything, but, if this is so severe that I shouldn't be playing ranked, then maybe ranked should be disabled until this is fixed? Not everyone reads the forums. You have thousands of mac users jumping into ranked right now, with no idea why they are crashing (potentially blaming it on their internet connection, since internet lag also bugsplats a mac quite easily). I'm gonna be playing ranked until you disable it.

1 - Mac OS X 10.9.5 2 - Macbook Pro 13-inch, Mid 2012 3 - Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB 4 - Wont load any game regardless of mode, it gets stuck on a black screen and no error message ever come, I can't command + tab also, have to force quit by pressing command + option + esc. The Launcher works fine though, everything is normal until the game is started and gets stuck. 5 - No PBE account

It seems that this isn't the problem of the majority here, people are complaining about crashes but they aren't saying that they can't play, I can't play at all! So I would like to know if you guys are aware of that and will fix it.

I have already made the repair couple times, switched regions, tried to delete and download everything again but this wouldn't work, the download would fail at some point, so I had to restore the old file.

If this is a known issue please give me a link so I can fix it, I keep searching but best I found is this forum.

Got the patch and downloaded it. 3 TIMES IN 1 GAME i was kicked off. This time it wasn't bugs plat the client freezed and i had to shut off my mac altogether. This is losing me lp. no loss forgiven nothing. This is outrageous this has been going on for 4 days now. Mac users are not feeling the love. And I'm sure i speak for many. We are very frustrating. Everyday i check for an update. "still working". Seems as if mac users are not priority i dont know

My friend MissRiptide is running a Mac and crashing every game. Here are her stats:

  1. OSX 10.9.4
  2. Air 2012
  3. Intel HD graphic 4000

  5. Doesn't use PBE

MissRiptide just got an email warning her that she achieved level 1 leaverbuster stauts because of this crash. Will this be remedied?

Ranked, 5v5, and ARAM, also happened during Asencion. -It's pretty bad, every time I die, I freeze for about 1 second, maybe .5 seconds before I die, and I usually can't even tell what killed me. -----------THIS ONE is the one that makes me really, really frustrated: about once a game every other game I'l just freeze, my champion and all the graphics stand in place, but I don't get any "attempting to reconnect" popup or anything ALSO:: when this happens, I can't switch out of the League window like I can normally, I've tried everything, and at one point I was able to open iTunes in the background, but I can't leave the League window at all, this is so bad, it's happened multiple times during ranked games and every time I have to restart my computer. If I wait any longer than a minute or so (I've waited the 5-10 minutes to see if it reconnects) when I restart my computer, I reconnect but then it kicks me out because of lack of activity and I have to reconnect again.
  5. I don't have access to PBE.

The only reason I posted was because I haven't seen anyone else describe their crashes in the second way I described mine.

Thank you for finally paying attention to the Mac client though.

I am having random crashes with patch 4.17 too, except using the Windows client under Linux with WINE.

-When playing a game (i.e. non-spectated), the League of Legends.exe portion of the client is incredibly crash-prone regardless of video/quality settings, particularly when many characters are onscreen. (These crashes are caught by BugSplat and are not handled by Wine's debugger.)

-BugSplat crash reports sent in the event of the above have a 50% chance of actually having their data sent to Riot. (The third step in sending the report will return "Failed.")

You guys might want to take a look at it again because I don't even use a mac and I'm crashing and lagging hard. It may be more in mac users, but it seems to not just be them.

Hello!

My info:

  • OSX 10.9.5
  • Macbook Air, Mid-2012
  • Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
  • Frequency is variable. Since the issue has sprung up, I usually start with a one-man custom Howling Abyss (vs bots) to check the stability. On this I will Bugsplat about every 4th attempt, usually at loading screen, after which I'm usually OK to rejoin. About every other game I will DC, to the point of having to shut down the client and restart. If I'm able to get through 3-4 bot matches in a row without incident, I'll try an ARAM, from which I DC every 3rd or 4th match. I have horrendous community Internet (God bless all-bills-included student apartment living), so I assume a lot of the DC issues are from the inconsistent connection I have, but some of the DCs feel different; more abrupt and sudden.

The largest crash I experienced was yesterday when I DC'ed 2 minutes into an ARAM. Upon trying to rejoin, the client Bugsplat. At this point, my computer's Wifi showed I was connected, but I couldn't even connect through a browser. The computer remained this way for about 10 minutes before the connection randomly came back up, and I was able to get back on to the client (the game had apparently finished though, as my match history stated I left the game).

  • I haven't been approved for PBE yet, sadly. (Probably would help if I got the nerve to start playing ranked.)

tl;dr - Crashes/DCs are there, but wildly inconsistent.

Hey Riot! Thanks for all the time you're putting into this issue. I know it's been an on going battle for Mac clients even before now and appreciate what you're trying to do to help it. The small patch seemed to help yesterday, I was able to get through games even though crashing at the start (boo), but once reconnected it ran fine! (minus the crappy internet I was using at the time lol).

My first comment, wow. I've been having a huge problem with crashing and freezing in 5v5s and bot games as well.

  1. My processor is 1.8 GHz Intel Core i5
  2. I have a Macbook Air from 2012
  3. Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
  4. I crash every game no matter the mode. I crash trying to connect into the game from the very beginning, sometimes I can't even connect to a game at all until my 4th or 5th try. I crash after 10 minutes, it's all very random. It crashes when I've just got into lane, or when I'm attacking a minion, it doesn't matter if I just died, it crashes whenever it wants. Normal 5v5s I can't even play anymore because of the amount of crashes I have each game.

Riot recently sent me an email saying I was a level 1 Leaver and that's all because of the crashes. I keep trying to connect and it just doesn't work. My match history are a combination of defeats and leaves because I come back just when my team loses or I can never connect to the game. Please fix this Riot, it's really frustrating and it wastes a lot of my time trying to connect to something that'll lag right back out again. I've seen Bugsplat more than some of my best friends.

same god damn crashes. these damn things are making me slowly drop rank. I literally cant even play now, this is hurting literally everyone playing. Because as soon as a mac player crashes then the game goes to shit. this needs to be fixed asap and then some sort of compensation. I have lost atleast 10 ranked matches because the "patch" was supposed to "fix" the bugsplat issue. well I got more bugsplats not than I ever have with anything. So gg riot good job making a ton of players pissed.

I have not even been able to log into my account for about a week now. Riot said they fixed the problem with crashing but I haven't even been able to log in to begin with. It keeps telling me "connection error" and I have no idea why. I tried redownloading the game and restarting my computer, but nothing works. Can someone PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me! I just wanna play League!!!!!!!! PLEASE!!

Hey Rito,

Not at all a complaint so much as an observation, it might help soothe the aggravated masses (myself included, to some degree) for us to hear regular updates on the issue(s) and the progress you are (or aren't) making towards publishing a conclusive fix.

I am having a problem with my Macbook League of Legends launcher. I click on the League of Legends icon, and it's not even opening. My computer freezes indefinitely. I was hoping you guys could fix this problem quickly because I think a few people are having this problem. Please upvote if u are having the same problem. Thx

Is this issue is considered fix ? Because, for me it's not. I didn't see the warning about game crashed in mac client, but it's still doing it. It's really sad that I can't play at all for now one weeks.
