"Freezing" upon logging into the client

When I log in to the client, I'm unable to move my mouse. How do I avoid this / why does this happen / can this please get fixed? I've dealt with it for years, but it's silly that it still happens.

bump. Also, Sometimes it doesn't happen, but it's still generally annoying.
