Frozen?

I was playing with a friend when all of the sudden the game just kinda froze. Caster minions kept on attacking, Syndra's balls kept moving, and I was able to send private messages. The same happened for my friend. When I tried to launch it again I got the firewall error. My friend said when she launched there was an update. I really want to know whats going on.
