[CLIENT] Cant duo with unranked (but play 3v3) friend on SR ranked

My friend is ranked platinum in 3v3, but unranked on summoners rift. I am silver on SR. Because he only has one ranked score, it evidently counts him as platinum when locking us out of duos. Since SR rank supersedes 3v3 rank, even though i am gold on 3v3, I cannot duo queue with him even though he is unranked on SR.
