FPS drops to a 10 - 20 second freeze

Today, the only day out of the past few years I've been playing League, I noticed a pattern: the FPS would drop from my steady 55-60 down to 0 - 5. After that, I hit a hard freeze in game accompanied by the sound cutting in and out. I have been using the same laptop for the past 4 years with no issues with any of the other games I play or system functions. I am virus free and have plenty of free space. I can't wrap my head around what is causing these sudden problems.

This has continually happened for the past games I have played today and they each happen a few minutes apart.

Has anyone else ever experienced this and have a hotfix? I am thinking it is a bug as I never experienced it before this last patch.
