So I just got an S on Leona, who I don't own. I know I shouldn't be able to get a hextech chest and my season highest should still be N/A. But if I buy Leona? Will I instantly get a chest and a season high of S? Or will I just be trolled and have to get S again?

You'll have to get an S grade on the champion while owning them to get the Hextech Chest, if one is available for you. :( So, yes, you'll have to buy Leona and earn an S grade to earn one.
