Katarina Q cast cancel but goes on cd

When I cast my Q on kat on a minion and it dies mid Q cast animation, as the champion is throwing the dagger but not before it leaves the hand, the Q goes on cd but no dagger comes out and I don't get to reset my E. When looking back at it with downloaded replay it only shows the animation cancel but does not show Q going on cd even though i'm prevented from casting it
