Riot needs to allow account/login name changes

I recently submitted a request through Riot support to change the name for my account so that I did not have to type or see my current one to log in or have to see it in the account details.

Unfortunately, the support team, while kind and professional, was unable to help me because it was not technically possible. I find it unacceptable that this is not possible. There are many reasons someone would want to change not just their summoner name. Personally, mine now makes me uncomfortable and triggers dysphoria.

No other game, platform, or social media seems to function this way, Even Valve will change your Steam account name if you make an appropriate support request.

Riot needs to do the work behind the scenes for account infrastructure to make this possible. Or, in some way make the tools available for their support teams to resolve these types of issues instead of in effect saying "sorry you're out of luck".

My support team member told me Riot devs might just pay attention If I called attention to the issue here on the boards.

Honestly, this never struck me, and the idea is really nice!

One thing, as an IT that I can see, is that it would be a big change in the database. There are things that are connected with the summoner login name (which is given ID in the table) like payments, bans and so on and on. Changing it could actually result in a inavertable loss of data for Riot, and the player, because it wouldnt be able to connect it through (might be wrong here). I could say that the ID shouldnt get changed, when I change the login name, but I cannot see into the database itself, so I cannot tell :).

I myself am a full stack programmer and fully understand how it might be the case that it is currently impossible to just change the account name. I also find it an unacceptable state to be in. it's inherently bad design even if you never intend to let it change. and I also think that not allowing it to change is unacceptable.

Yea, I think we can both see the problem in that. But honestly, as a programmer, you can see some things that havent been changed in years, even tho the community still report it over and over. cough the client cough

You've obviously never played Dark Souls 3. You can't even change your character's name. If you realize you regret it, too late, you're stuck with it. And I think all those people who included "Knight" in their name, and got it censored "K***ht", would really like it changed.

Completely missing the point, just because you can find an example of others doing the same as Riot doesn't mean it's ok. your Riot account is used in multiple places and accrues $100's to $1000's of purchases over a lifetime and is intended to last nigh forever (so long as the game/community stick around). your dark soul's character lasts 2-3 years at the high end before you get bored.

saying "sorry we can't" is an unacceptable answer.

I have recently paid for my summoned name change, expecting my log in name to change also.

This was disappointing to say the least. I hope they find a way to provide this service even if at extra cost.

It's a perfect analogy. Just how you have one lol acc and can change the summoner name, you have one steam account, and can make different characters. And I assure you, ppl generally spend a lot more money on steam than on lol.

Just to be sure, you do mean the account name and not your summoner name [Nami]? Because you can ticket for a summoner name swap between two accounts you own and they'll only take out the cost of one name change from one of the accounts.

Thanks for letting me know but I mean the account (login) name as I've already swapped summoner names before.
