Tryndamere spinning slash+static shiv

Today i was playing vs tryndamere, i was about double the distance of his spinning slash from me to him. He spun, closed the distance by halfway without hitting anything when the static shiv proc'd and i died. When i checked my death recap both the damage from the spinning slash AND static shiv had been applied though tryndamere never hit ANYTHING with his spinning slash.
