I was playing as karma and when I was hitting the opponents I was not receiving the gold when i had bought the spellthief. I had 3 charges on it and it wasn't working.

Only reason I can think of is that Spellthief's Edge requires you to wait like 10 or 12 seconds to activate it after you kill a minion. If you killed something, you can't expend charges. That's all I have.
