Karma/Spellthiefs Bug w/ Malzahar

When I was playing earlier, my Q's would not generate any gold with my when attacking . Basically, my autos and abilities on any other champion in the game would get me Tribute Gold, however when laning vs none of my abilities or auto attacks would get me any tribute gold. If anybody has an explanation why or if it is just a bug, please feel free to share!
