[Gameplay] Hotkey casting on friendly champions (Skill + F1, F2, F3...)

In the wake of the patch 5.8, I have noticed an issue with using hotkeys (F1, F2, ...) to cast skills on friendly champions.

Prior to 5.8 behavior: Pressing a champion's key: Jump camera to that champion Pressing a skill (say, Janna's shield) then a champion's hotkey: Cast on that champion without moving the camera NOTE: This is NOT "quick casting" the skill. It is the press-skill-then-click method, with the "click" being replaced by F1, F2, etc.

Post 5.8, attempting to cast a skill using this method now centers the camera on the targeted champion and seems to have a slightly delayed cast time.

As a support, I use this functionality extensively to quickly and accurately target my skills, especially on champions such as Lulu who have skills that can target both teammates and enemies.

I am reporting this as a bug because the behavior has changed in a way not detailed in the patch notes, and it has rendered what I feel to be a key technique for support play nearly unusable.

  1. Is this a bug?
  2. Will it be fixed?

This has been making me crazy!

I recently hopped into a custom game to make sure everything was all right since it'd been months I last played and found myself feeling really disoriented without knowing why. At first I chalked it up to me just being super rusty, but then I realised that when I self-casted (I use the "Select Self" option which acts the same as the function keys for allies), the camera would leap back to me, which I'm positive didn't happen before.

I proceeded to test out the other function keys and lo-and-behold, it's just as you described OP, the camera jumps to the ally you're trying to cast on where as before it didn't do that. I even had some friends test it out for me and they reported back with the same thing: It's not just me; it's different from before.

But none of them were really bothered by it as they don't use the function keys much. And it seems like most players aren't inhibited by the change as this is the only post I found on it! (Or maybe I'm just searching wrong.)

As a support player who uses them a lot as well, this bug/change really bothers me. Maybe I'm just being sensitive about the camera bouncing around, but on champs like Nami and Lulu where I'm constantly casting spells on allies or myself, the jerking view changes are brutal in teamfights and give me a slight sense of vertigo. It's led me to avoid playing League for the time being, or at the very least avoid playing some of my favourite supports.

I really hope this is just a bug since, like you said, nothing was ever mentioned in patch notes and it certainly doesn't help gameplay in any way. And if so, Riot please fix it! :[
