[CLIENT] Mac client constantly having connection timeouts

I've had a lot of issues with League for a while, including continuous discons while not in game, the client shutting itself down, erratic FPS and slow to load. I think most of the problems are down to an old Macbook (3 years) and an old OS (Lion).

However, the client regularly has a "Connection Error" when I'm just sat in client, and I don't think that's to do with my laptop. I miss out on messages and game invites, it means I have trouble using the shop, and today it resulted in the problem below. There's nothing wrong with my internet, as I have no problems with any other site or game, and my ping/connection is nearly always fine in game. But here is a break down:

  1. What: Client has a connection error/connection timeout, and prevent invites, messages etc
  2. When: Sit with client open for any length of time
  3. Frequency: Disconnects every 30-60 seconds

Usually I can live with it but today it disconned during champion select, at the end of the 'countdown', and it was taken as though I had quit. It came up with the usual dialog box "connection timeout", but then it shut down the whole client when I pressed OK. When I reopened the client and logged in, I was back on the home screen instead of being asked to reconnect to the game as I assumed I would be. Tried to start a new game, but had to wait the 15 minutes or so because I "abandoned a recent game during champion select".

Really annoying!
