What Happened I was soloing the dragon, and as I pressed smite on it at 576 health, it did not die even though my smite did 640 damage. Upon further investigation, it appears that the dragon's health had jumped to 818 right before I smote it, resulting in its survival.

According to the League of Legends wikia, the dragon gains 264 health per level. 818 minus 576 equals 242. However, the remaining 22 health can be accounted for with my red buff, which did 22 damage per tick. This leads me to conclude that the dragon had leveled up while I was fighting it.

However, the patch 6.13 states that the dragon (and rift herald) will wait until out of combat for 30 seconds to level up.

Reproducing the Bug

  1. Engage the dragon in combat before it would levels up.
  2. Determine if the dragon had regained health due to leveling up while in combat.

Conclusion Since I could not find any information about dragon leveling mechanics, I cannot say with certainty that the dragon had leveled up, especially since the dragon's leveling up sound and visual effects were removed as per patch 6.13. However, the numbers seem to point to this happening.

The linked video shows what I had described above. It's a little hard to see since it happened so fast (and I pressed space right before it so the health number moves), but if you watch carefully you can see the number go up (at around 0:07).

And even if you can't see that, it is still obvious that I smote it at 576 health, and with smite doing 640 damage, it should have died.
