League of Legends freezes in-game/ screen turns pitch black

For some reason in game my screen constantly freezes or turns pitch black. I've turned off most heavy duty things running in my background and have made sure to put my video quality settings to low. Does anyone know anything about this or a fix that I can do to solve the problem? Even though the game freezes my computer still continues to run, so I have to use task manager to close the client.
